Cory Davis was born and raised in Littlefield, Texas, and proudly made Smyer his home in 2025. He and his wife, Faith, have been married for 9 years and are raising their two children, Cutter and Paisley, who both attend Smyer ISD.

In 2024, Cory joined the Smyer Volunteer Fire Department, where he quickly found a sense of purpose in serving something greater than himself. His passion for helping others and giving back to the community has made his role especially meaningful.

Cory has a deep appreciation for the people of Smyer and is honored to serve alongside them. He looks forward to continuing to support and protect this community and is excited about what the future holds for the town he proudly calls home.

🚨Spotlight

Tim Mayhall moved back into the Eastern Hockley County region in 2017 from Lubbock,Tx with his wife Michele, whom he has been with for 28 yrs and son Lennon. He joined the Smyer VFD in 2019, and is a very active member of the department and enjoys giving back to the community through the Fire Department. Having the support of the County and City of Smyer is very important to him as he wants the VFD to grow as the need becomes more dire than ever. Tim has worked tirelessly to make all fundraising efforts the best they could be, even had his job donate a semi-tractor to the VFD for water support on the East side of the county. Tim has attended some extensive training to become a more experienced member. He recently passed his National Registry of EMT, and received his certification from the State of Texas. He is currently one of the two certified EMT’s that will be able to assist in medical response in the Smyer area along with Levelland’s medical services very soon. These achievements have taken many hours of personal time and dedication including about 7 months of night school two times a week last year. Tim is a reliable resource and always ready to help his neighbors when he can.

Congratulations on the accomplishments and thank you and your family for giving your time to make the community a safer place.

SVFD has been on scene for a grass/pallets of feed fire off 114 since about 7:45.
From Assistant Chief Case Eoff “Forward progress has been stopped… mopping up now.
Smyer fire department will be on scene for another couple hours”

🚒 Spotlight

Craig Tevis has been with Smyer VFD since 2024, currently serving as our Lieutenant. He grew up on the Central Coast of California and is a 3rd generation Farmer/Rancher. He graduated from Righetti High School in Santa Maria, Ca. He has been a grape grower for 26 years, leading large teams and implementing Health & Safety Management for them and currently serves as Director of Vineyards for Texas Vine Country. He volunteered for a few years at Cal Fire out of Creston, Ca. Craig and his family moved to Texas in 2023. He married his wife Stacey in 2001 and they have two children, Cole and Wes.

‼️Tuesday 2/17 is looking to be one of those nasty windy days we'll all want to forget. Wind gusting up to 60+ mph out of the southwest is likely across the northern Texas/Oklahoma Panhandles, eastern New Mexico, and adjacent Colorado and Kansas. Dust and dry air will mix in throughout the day, reducing humidity. All of this combined to be a significant fire danger across the high plains. Xcel Energy has announced the possibility of blackouts starting at 9am in order to reduce overall fire danger. Extra fire units from around the country are positioning themselves in the area. You'll want to have a plan in place in case evacuation orders are activated.

Looking ahead to the rest of February, not great. No real measurable rain is expected, and the pattern supports this. This means that the vegetation will continue to dry out, adding more fuel for any wildfires down the line. We're really hoping March will bring some better moisture chances.

With temperatures expected to drop below freezing for several days starting this Friday, the Smyer Fire Department wants to help make sure everyone in our community stays safe and accounted for.

If you know of an elderly neighbor, a family member, or anyone who may need a welfare check during this cold weather — especially if snow or icy conditions develop — please don’t hesitate to contact us. We would much rather check on someone early than find out help was needed too late.

🚨Spotlight!

Michael Drachenberg is a near lifelong resident of Hockley County Texas. He grew up on the family farm, which raised cotton, cattle, and hogs. He attended Smyer School, graduating in 1997. After graduation he attended South Plains College and Texas Tech University, obtaining degrees in Agricultural and Applied Economics and Crop Science. Michael joined the Smyer Volunteer Fire Department in 2004. During his time with the fire department he has been able to obtain several fire and EMS certifications. Recently, Michael was recognized by the State Firefighters and Fire Marshals Association of Texas (SFFMA) for achieving his Master Firefighter Certification. Michael currently serves the SVFD as Captain and Training Coordinator. He married his wife, Charee in 2004 and they have 2 children, J.W., and Ellie.
