DeKalb County Commission Votes Down Jail Project Postponement….
A proposal to temporarily halt work on DeKalb County’s planned jail project until after the August election failed, with commissioners voting 9-3 against the measure.

Commissioner Myron Rhodey said voters should go to the polls before work continues.

“I think we need to, according to people I’ve talked with, we need to slow down on this jail project,” Rhodey said. “I’m not saying discontinue it, but we need to, I make a motion that we curtail any more business with it until after the election.”

Mayor Matt Adcock clarified the motion would freeze the project by preventing additional bids or other work from moving forward until commissioners could revisit the issue following the election.

Before the vote, Commissioner Beth Pafford questioned whether pausing the project could create additional costs if the county is already under contract. Adcock said he was unsure of the financial impact and that the issue would require additional study.

Commissioners Greg Matthews, Myron Rhodey and Beth Pafford voted in favor of delaying the project. Larry Green, Jack Barton, Tom Chandler, Andy Pack, Mathias Anderson, Glenn Merriman, Daniel Cripps, Jeff Barnes and Sabrina Farler voted against the proposal, defeating the motion by a 9-3 margin.

May 20, 2026

County Mayor Matt Adcock
County Mayor Matt Adcock has informed the county commissioners that no monthly meeting or work session of the county commission will be held in May due to a lack of business.

The May workshop date had previously been announced for Thursday, May 21 at 6 p.m. in the Tennessee Room of the county complex and the regular meeting for May had been announced for Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the county complex because the regular monthly meeting date of May 25 falls on Memorial Day.

Neither meeting will be held in May

“I have decided to cancel the County Commission’s regular meeting and workshop meeting for the month of May due to the lack of business,” said County Mayor Adcock. “ We will be having our regular scheduled meeting in June and will be presenting the fiscal year 2027 budget and adopting the certified tax rate. I have no new business that needs to be presented. This will also be saving the county $3,150 in committee member fees when considering that both the workshop and formal meetings are cancelled. Thank you for all you do, and I will see you all in June,” said County Mayor Adcock in his email message to the county commissioners.
