Research consistently shows that hand counts are less reliable than machine tabulators. Our Secretary of State-elect has touted hand audits as a way to increase voter trust in the election process. The National Conference of State Legislatures notes an important caveat: "Audits—postelection audits, in particular—may help increase trust in elections, but voters must also have confidence in the audit."
