Tom Cool for South Dakota Secretary of State

Tom Cool for South Dakota Secretary of State Running to bring a clear head and sensible solutions to the SD Secretary of State's office Michael Parish.

I'm a fourth-generation South Dakotan descended from German and Norwegian immigrants and a long line of family business owners. I grew up in Platte, SD, where my great-grandfather constructed the first building on Main Street. My wife, Sharon, a retired University of Sioux Falls psychology professor, and I live in Sioux Falls, where we raised our three sons and are longtime members of St. I'm a pr

oud product of our state's public education system, graduating high school in my hometown of Platte and earning a BA in Mass Communications from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. My first job after college was as a newspaper reporter in Richmond, Indiana covering local government.

I retired in 2022 after nearly four decades spent assisting South Dakota students, high schools and post-secondary schools with post-high school planning as the executive director of the Council on College Admission in South Dakota. My previous experience includes serving in administrator and director roles for various organizations as well as independent consulting.

Research consistently shows that hand counts are less reliable than machine tabulators. Our Secretary of State-elect has touted hand audits as a way to increase voter trust in the election process. The National Conference of State Legislatures notes an important caveat: "Audits—postelection audits, in particular—may help increase trust in elections, but voters must also have confidence in the audit." Let's all keep a sharp eye on what changes the SD SoS and state legislature intend to make to our elections.

The case of Tripp County’s 75 “missing” ballots has been solved, County Auditor Barb Desersa said this week. The discrepancy emerged last week after a hand count of ballots in the only county in South Dakota in nearly 20 years to perform one. The mismatch does not have any impact on election r...

My opponent took her party leaders' advice after her disastrous election-denying interviews: Stop talking to the press. "Johnson did not respond to a request for an interview from Forum News Service." I spoke with reporters from *The Blaze* Radio Network's WNAX, and she's afraid to speak with the Mitchell Daily Republic. 🙃

Monae Johnson, who upset incumbent Steve Barnett at the Republican convention, has been difficult to pin down on the legitimacy of the past election. Democrat Tom Cool is betting that stance can turn enough swing voters to his side.

Secretary of State elections usually run under the radar. But the stakes in these races across the country have never been greater than in 2022, with election deniers aiming to take over as states' top election officials. At best if they win, we'll have election officials with poor judgment. At worst, the "wrong kind" of voters will be disenfranchised and the will of the people - democracy itself - overturned. Please vote for honesty and TRUE election integrity.

WNAX interview sound bites (on The Blaze radio network!) from a stop in Yankton on the South Dakota Democratic Party's Get Out the Vote statewide tour. Quick take: protecting the voting process includes keeping the process accessible, hand counts of ballots are statistically less reliable and more resource/time intensive, and I'll keep the Secretary of State office running smoothly to keep business services and government filings efficient and on track.
