Emergency Blood Shortage: Donors Needed Now

An Extreme Heat Warning from NWS Lincoln is in effect through 9 PM CDT tonight. Heat index values could reach 110 to 115°F this afternoon, a level that poses serious risk of heat-related illness for anyone outdoors, without air conditioning, or working in unventilated spaces. Stay in a cool environment, drink water consistently, and check on neighbors and family members who may lack reliable cooling. Young children and pets should never be left in vehicles.

A separate threat arrives this afternoon: the SPC has a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms, with storms possible after 3 PM and the greatest likelihood between mid-afternoon and early evening. Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, along with the potential for heavy rainfall. Outdoor activities and events should have a shelter plan ready before storms become possible. If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for your area, move indoors and remain there until the warning expires. Monitor NWS Lincoln and keep alerts enabled through the evening.

An Extreme Heat Warning from NWS Lincoln remains in effect through Monday evening, July 27 at 9 PM CDT. Heat index values are expected to reach 108 to 112°F through Monday, making this the most dangerous heat stretch of the summer for central Illinois. Stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible, drink water regularly, and avoid prolonged time outdoors during peak afternoon hours. Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without reliable cooling access. Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles. A separate storm threat is also possible Sunday night into Monday morning, with damaging wind gusts the main concern.

A Heat Advisory from NWS Lincoln takes effect Sunday at noon and runs through Monday at 9 PM CDT for Sangamon County, including Sherman. Heat index values of 105 to 110°F are expected during that period, with overnight lows staying in the mid-70s offering limited relief. Hot, humid conditions can cause heat illness quickly, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Drink plenty of fluids, limit time outdoors during the afternoon peak, and check on neighbors and relatives. Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles. If you need a cool environment, plan for that before Sunday noon when the advisory begins.

An Air Quality Action Day issued by the Illinois EPA and NWS Lincoln is in effect through Monday at 3:00 PM CDT for Sangamon County and much of central and eastern Illinois. Ground-level ozone and fine particulates, including smoke from Canadian wildfires, are at or above Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups levels today and are expected to continue into Monday. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions, should limit time spent outdoors, particularly during afternoon hours when ozone tends to peak. Those without respiratory concerns can still take precautions by reducing strenuous outdoor activity and keeping windows closed during the hottest part of the day. Monitor air quality conditions through the Illinois EPA and NWS Lincoln for any changes before planning outdoor activities Monday.

What a great night celebrating Independence Day and the start of America’s 250th year.

The fireworks were a wonderful community moment, and we’re grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate safely. Behind the scenes, many partners worked together to help make the evening successful, including the Sherman Fire Protection District, Sherman Police Department, the Village of Sherman, Illinois, and our weather monitoring team.

With showers and storms in the region, conditions were watched closely before and during the event so the celebration could move forward safely and responsibly.

Thank you to every agency, volunteer, and community member who helped make this year’s fireworks a safe, memorable, and meaningful kickoff to our nation’s 250th celebration.
