Good morning, everyone!
Today is a very special day for all of us at REACT EMS. Today marks the 30th anniversary of REACT EMS in Pottawatomie County!
On March 17, 1996, the Shawnee Hospital Authority and the Pottawatomie County Hospital Authority partnered together to form the REACT Ambulance Authority. This was a joining of the 2 previous ambulance services in Pottawatomie County, EMPACT and RESPOND. This union would change the face of emergency medical care in our county for decades to come. The creating authorities agreed to financially support REACT until it could support itself. This was short-lived as REACT has been completely self-supporting since July 1996. REACT can sustain 24-hour daily operations without any cost to the cities and communities in our service area.
Here are a just few statistics:
1. In 1996, REACT ran 4,305 calls for service with 27 employees. This was done with 3 24-hour units.
2. In 2025, REACT ran 12,857 calls for service with 84 employees. This was done with 5 24-hour units and 1 12-hour unit.
3. REACT responds to all calls for service in Pottawatomie County and a small area in southern Lincoln County. In all, REACT serves approximately 890 square miles and serves over 85,000 residents of the 2 counties.
4. Cities in our response area include Shawnee, Tecumseh, McLoud, Dale, Meeker, Bethel Acres, Pink, Earlsboro, Brookesville, Maud, Tribbey, St. Louis, Pearson, Wannette, and Asher.
5. Since 1996, REACT has responded to over 282,710 calls for service and transported 218,786 patients.
6. In the last 10 years the REACT EMS fleet has traveled approximately 4,742,121 miles.
REACT EMS takes great pride in providing top-quality emergency medical care to our community with continuous training and the most up-to-date equipment available but, most of all, it is the dedication of our employees that has made REACT so successful.
We look forward to another 30 years as YOUR emergency medical service!
