The first question that I have been asked many times is the following:
What do you believe the roles and responsibilities are for a school board member?
I have broken this question down into what I feel a board member should do:
1) The most important role of a school board member is the appointment of the director of schools/Superintendent. Since the superintendent is no longer an elected position, it is of upmost importance that your school board member votes as a true representative of their constituents. By using their knowledge of what the residents of Johnson County expects of a director and voting to appoint someone that meets those expectations. I do not support the current director of schools and feel that it is time for change. The current school board just recently voted to extend the directors contract for 3 more years.
2) A board members responsibility for long term planning for the future of the school system. I believe in being proactive to issues and not reactive to issues. From building maintenance, new school needs, transportation needs, athletics, future vocational training and many more.
3) Approving the school system budget and making recommendations of board member funding priorities within a budget. Approving purchasing guidelines and policies for the system to make sure funds are being used as efficiently as possible. Through lobbying, negotiating and finding additional sources of funding from county govt, state and federal sources.
4) Developing and approving system wide policies to maintain legal standing with state and federal education laws. Making sure policies are in place that protect our staff and students over a broad range of issues.
