Elect Bradley McQueen for 3rd District School Board

Elect Bradley McQueen for 3rd District School Board I’m running for school board member for the 3rd District of Johnson County.

06/05/2026

The first question that I have been asked many times is the following:

What do you believe the roles and responsibilities are for a school board member?

I have broken this question down into what I feel a board member should do:

1) The most important role of a school board member is the appointment of the director of schools/Superintendent. Since the superintendent is no longer an elected position, it is of upmost importance that your school board member votes as a true representative of their constituents. By using their knowledge of what the residents of Johnson County expects of a director and voting to appoint someone that meets those expectations. I do not support the current director of schools and feel that it is time for change. The current school board just recently voted to extend the directors contract for 3 more years.

2) A board members responsibility for long term planning for the future of the school system. I believe in being proactive to issues and not reactive to issues. From building maintenance, new school needs, transportation needs, athletics, future vocational training and many more.

3) Approving the school system budget and making recommendations of board member funding priorities within a budget. Approving purchasing guidelines and policies for the system to make sure funds are being used as efficiently as possible. Through lobbying, negotiating and finding additional sources of funding from county govt, state and federal sources.

4) Developing and approving system wide policies to maintain legal standing with state and federal education laws. Making sure policies are in place that protect our staff and students over a broad range of issues.

I would like to thank everyone for liking and sharing my page. Over the next few weeks I will be answering most of the questions that I have been receiving from the community about my view, vision and expectations for our school system. I do plan to make a few day trips around later in the month to visit community members especially in the dry run and butler areas. If someone would like to meet up in person or know of someone who does, please reach out and I’ll do my best to meet up with them. Please feel free to share my posts about my stance on issues in the near future.

I officially have some signs. If anyone would like to support my campaign by allowing a yard sign, I would appreciate it...

I officially have some signs. If anyone would like to support my campaign by allowing a yard sign, I would appreciate it. Especially if you live on a well traveled road. Send me a message and include your address if I don’t know where you live and I’ll get some out this week.

My name is Bradley McQueen and I am asking for your vote for school board member for district 3 (Shady, Doe, Butler and Dry Run). I am running as an independent candidate in the August 5 election.

My reason for running is to give people a different option for a school board member. Like so many other people that I have spoken with, I am not happy with the direction of our school system. Our staff is underpaid, over worked and have minimum resources to accomplish their goals. Especially our teacher aids, school bus drivers and other support staff. Students with special needs are not being offered appropriate services without extensive parent pressure during meetings. Our schools are receiving poor grades on state reviews and as a parent I don’t like receiving letters that my child attends school at a low performing school.

A little bit about who I am as a person. I’m 36 years old and graduated from JCHS in 2007 and attended the University of Tennessee receiving a bachelors of science in Forestry degree in 2011. I’m a 7th generation Johnson countian and still farm the same piece of land in Shady Valley as the generations before me. I work for Bristol Virginia Fire Department as a Fire Captain and have been there for 14 years. I also farm and do small logging jobs on the side. I’m married to Emily and we have 2 kids Olivia (10) and Easton (5). Both kids attend Doe elementary. Our son Easton is non-verbal autistic and he was my initial motivation to run for school board due to challenges faced with getting him the services he needs at school. In my free time you will find me volunteering with Shady Valley Fire Dept or in the woods hunting.

I am a proven leader that is not afraid to speak up and make hard decisions. I believe in doing what’s right for the kids of this county by making sound, logical and educated decisions on their behalf and yours. I make no promises that I can fix every issue but as your board member I will listen and make your voices heard.

Thank you,

Bradley.
