🧡 Species Spotlight of the Month: Eastern Newt

What’s that bright orange critter by your shoe?
Oh, no big deal — just an Eastern Newt in its red eft phase!

These little wonders have a triple life cycle (a characteristic of a true newt), which basically makes them the shape‑shifters of the amphibian world. They start life in the water as olive‑green babies with tail fins and feathery gills. Then they head onto land and transform into the bright orange efts you see on the trail. Finally, they return to the water as adults for their last life stage.

Most amphibians only get one makeover… the Eastern Newt gets two. Show‑offs.

✨ Fun fact: Those orange spots? They’re a warning sign! Eastern Newts are slightly toxic, which makes fish think twice before turning them into a snack.

And just a friendly reminder:
Don’t go licking newts.
(We shouldn’t have to say it… but here we are.)

Today, we pause to honor the brave service members who gave their lives in defense of our country. Their sacrifice protects the lands we cherish — including the forests, trails, and quiet places that make Head of the Crow so special.

As you spend time outdoors today, whether hiking a familiar path or simply enjoying the stillness of nature, we invite you to take a moment of reflection. The freedom to explore and enjoy these public lands exists because of those who served with courage and never returned home.

From all of us at Head of the Crow State Park, we extend our deepest gratitude to the families and loved ones of our fallen heroes. Their legacy lives on in the landscapes we protect and the communities we serve.
