It’s time for another well deserved superintendent spotlight. Coming in this week, is none other than…Jordan Kalasky, the Maestro of one of our Arthur Hills courses. Let’s check
In with him!

Course: Heritage Shores

What time does the alarm clock go off : 3:50am

Years at current course: 7

Where it all started – your first course: Columbus Park GC, 9 hole park district course outside of Chicago, IL

Property Highlights

Favorite View - On the back of #4 green, looking back towards the fairway

The Shore Challenge – what is a challenge that is unique to taking care of turf on your property or the eastern shore: Keeping everything on schedule with the weather and the demand for the golf course

Pro Tip for Golfers – what should they know before playing: Generous fairways, keep the ball in the short stuff and you’ll have a great round

Three words to describe your course - Fun, challenging, open

Just for fun
The 7 degrees of Shore Connection –
Who are other superintendents or salesperson around the eastern shore that you know well and how did your paths cross (e.g. former boss, turf classmates). —-As a transplant to the area, I didn’t have many connections when I got here. Over the years, I’ve built great relationships and I’m very appreciative of all the people that made me feel welcome.

Team Shoutouts – who is your support system – assistants: Dennis Supe Jr., Assistant (20 years on property!) and Jason Mumford (20 years on property, as well!), Mechanic. I definitely could not do my job without them.

In the event you get a day off, what is your day off destination: Home or travelling with my family

Keep up the great work Jordan!

Congratulations Brad, keep up the great work!

Superintendent Spotlight

Name: Derek Haley - Superintendent
Course: Talbot Country Club

What time does the alarm clock go off : 4:57, I don’t know why, but I’m superstitious about random stuff. I don’t set my alarm to your typical round numbers like 4:45 or 5:00.

Years at current course: 10

Where it all started, your first course: Maple Dale Country Club and Garrison’s Lake Golf Course. $5.15 and hour and free golf!

Property Highlights

Favorite View: The best view is from our clubhouse porch overlooking Trippe Creek on the Tred Avon river and the 18th hole.

The Shore Challenge – what is a challenge that is unique to taking care of turf on your property or the eastern shore: As many in the turf industry would say, dealing with the weather is our biggest challenge. Experiencing the last two winters and having pretty much wall to wall Bermuda everywhere outside of greens, I fear January and February more than July and August.

Pro Tip for Golfers – what should they know before playing: There is nothing overly tricky about the golf course, what you see is what you get. Hit em straight, don’t leave yourself short sided around the greens, and stay below the hole.

Three words to describe your course: Flat, and hopefully Firm and Fast

Just For Fun

The 7 degrees of Shore Connection – Who are other superintendents or salesperson around the eastern shore that you know well and how did your paths cross (e.g. former boss, turf classmates): Tons of connections but I’ll mention the ones I’ve worked with at previous golf courses. Starting with the author/creator of Superintendent Spotlight, Mike Johnston and I started at Dupont Country Club on the very same day back in 2006. Chris Cannatelli from Mid-Atlantic Dryject, we go way back to little league baseball and he was also one of my former assistants at Dupont CC. Thomas “Tippy” Tipton and I worked together at Fieldstone Golf Club back in 2004, along with Joe Gulotti. Not sure if Gulotti counts as a Shore Connection but wanted to give him a shout out anyway. One of the first Superintendents I worked for was Randy Rider at Garrisons Lake.

Team Shoutouts – who is your support system – assistants: I have two great assistants in Billy Ehle and Logan McHenry and an excellent Equipment Manager in Joe Maddox

In the event you get a day off, what is your day off destination: Depends on the time of year, Summer I’ll be out on the boat fishing or crabbing. Fall/Winter In the duck blind or deer stand.

Keep up the great work Derek!

Superintendent Spotlight

Something new for the page - In the spirit of recognizing the people behind the beautiful courses of the Eastern Shore we would like to highlight a superintendent each month and give you some insight into their personality as well as the personality of the course. First up - Hog Neck Golf Course

Name: Owen Sutherland - Superintendent Hog Neck GC

What time does the alarm clock go off :
Whats an alarm clock? I wake up around 4 every morning

Years at current course: 17 years

Where it all started, your first course:
Queenstown Harbor Golf Links

Favorite view on the property:
From my front porch, looking across 6 executive to 8 championship, when a storm is rolling in after a droughty streak.

The Shore Challenge – what is a challenge that is unique to taking care of turf on your property or the eastern shore:
Sodium content in the well that fills the irrigation ponds.

Pro Tip for Golfers – what should they know before playing:
Stock up on golf balls at the pro shop after the front 9. (or maybe that’s just me)

Three words to describe your course:
Full of surprises

Just for fun
The 7 degrees of Shore Connection – Who are other your influencers, peers and friends from the shore:
Most of my supervisors from Queenstown, which are retired or at other courses. Have always leaned on them over the years. Salesmen from several different companies- almost all were on the course and are valuable resources and have become close friends over the years.

Team Shoutouts:
Rick Stacey, my assistant- has been with me since 2012. He is a valuable asset for me, probably wouldn’t have survived this long without him. Equipment tech- Kirk Jenkins- hasn’t been with me for long but definitely was a good find. Quite a character.

In the event you get a day off, what is your day off destination: Usually try to get out on the water.

Check out Owen, Rick and Kirk at the upcoming meeting as they host our annual crab feast.
