Prop 483 (the homeless car park) was defeated by a resounding margin. We saved the Cultural Park for now. Thank you to everyone who participated in the referendum.

How you vote on Prop 483 depends on whether you know the facts. The City has misleadingly presented the homeless car park as being only for workers even though the admission criteria (and federal law) do not permit discrimination on the basis of employment. An unemployed person with drug addiction or serious mental illness can be admitted to the park . “Retired” people are also eligible to sleep in the park. This undefined term would include a 35-year old person who decides to stop working and live a nomad lifestyle. This is not a program just for “workers” and they know it.

Sedona’s homeless car park has been widely publicized around the country and is already attracting more homeless people to our City. If the car park is opened it will continue to be a magnet to homeless people leaving towns and cities elsewhere that are cracking down on homelessness. If these new homeless arrivals are not allowed into the park or are asked to leave because of bad behavior, they will not leave Sedona. Many of them will stay and in a few months or years the quality of life in Sedona will be degraded as it has been in so many other places.
