Most Seattle citizens are not aware of the huge changes coming to our own Pike Place Market. Development of the open air parking lot on Western Ave and the surrounding area (the pc1 north project) will have dramatic affects. The challenge? How to create a smooth transition from the city's new waterfront up to the market. Our PDA Council has the responsibility for the design and oversight of the pc
1 north project. You have opportunities to follow their progress and express opinions and concerns. It is a time for concerned citizens to be hopeful but watchful and vigilant. The initial designs were met with horror. It was as if a curtain would be drawn across the west and south facing part of the market. The views would be lost, and the market would be lost in the new development. That initial presentation spoke of "New Views" but no mention of the views that the market has had for over 105 years that would be lost. And that's where much of the discussion was stagnated until more meetings that did include the community, were held and new ideas and proposals were brought up. We all want to trust that the final design decisions will be the right thing for the market, not as a 10 year market but as a two and three hundred year market. We have an awesome opportunity to create, along with the Waterfront Committee, the most beautiful and vibrant waterfront on the West Coast. We have an opportunity to frame the market. To continue to honor it's vitality and continuity of the last 105 years. We ask simply that the market views do not have a curtain drawn across them, but that the committee continues to take this opportunity to frame it as is it's right and preserve it’s views and charm. For people to look up from the waterfront and want to make the trek to the "old town". To be able to look down from the market and continue to watch the ferries pull out, the clouds roll across the water, the views of West Seattle and the Olympics as they always have. The only thing that is for certain is that things will always change. Let's make this change something that your children and grandchildren will be proud to be a part of.
