Our live fire training from Monday did not progress as we had hoped. Conditions were just not right for firing operations. We will most likely try again later in June. Just because the fire didn’t do what we had hoped does not make for a missed opportunity or wasted night. Crews had repetition in setting up Water Supply, deploying progressive hose lays, walking mobile attack with our brush rigs, operating within the command structure, and an opportunity to work alongside our partners from ODF Astoria. We will share another notice when we intend to attempt to burn again.

See notice below regarding LIVE FIRE TRAINING that will be conducted this evening. Smoke and or flames will be visible in the area of Loyd Lane and Bear Road starting at 6:00pm. Fire apparatus will be moving in the area with emergency lights active. The fire district will culminate its annual wildland fire training by burning approximately 3 acres of grass and brush this year ahead of fire season. There is no safe location for community to view this training exercise and we ask that you not access Bear Rd this evening between 5:30pm and 8:30pm unless you are a resident. Crews will remain on scene until the mop up of the fire is complete this evening.

Come out and see us at Jewell School! Get an update on how the district is doing, learn about preparing for fire season, and hear what’s happening to the Fire District headquarters before we start our seismic rehabilitation of our main fire station. Dinner at 6:00pm and presentation starting at 7:00pm. Apparatus will be on display. Come meet your firefighters!

Training Information

On Wednesday, April 15, Lewis & Clark Rural Fire Protection District (RFPD) hosted a multi‑agency training focused on vehicle fires with entrapment. Crews from Astoria Fire Department, Seaside Fire & Rescue, and Elsie‑Vinemaple Fire Department joined us for the evening drill. Four engines were used to run eleven different evolutions, including live‑fire scenarios and simulated driver and passenger entrapments. Firefighters practiced hose deployment, coordinated fire attack, and the use of vehicle extrication tools under realistic conditions. These hands‑on drills strengthen interagency coordination, build confidence, and ensure our teams are ready for rapid, effective response on real incidents. We appreciate our partner agencies for training with us and supporting community safety.

We have been made aware of a regional Verizon Wireless outage that is impacting non emergency calls through Clatsop and Columbia County. Systems have been tested locally and it appears that calls to 911 are still able to go through. Verizon has not provided an ETA for repair.
