It's absolutely my honor.

We’re thrilled to announce the keynote speakers for this year’s State of the Georgia Coast conference!

Our opening address will be from Dionne Hoskins-Brown, director of NOAA Sponsored Programs at Savannah State University. Since 1999, she has managed NOAA cooperative research programs in which HBCU faculty and students perform research ranging from salt marsh and oyster reef habitat assessment and marine mammal monitoring to studying commercially important invertebrate fisheries and ocean acidification. Hoskins-Brown also serves as chair on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission.

Our closing speaker will be Corporate Sustainability Manager of Georgia Ports Authority, Tiffoni Buckle-McCartney. She is an experienced Environmental Health and Safety professional, sustainability leader, and certified Maritime Port Executive (MPE). Buckle-McCartney previously worked as the sustainability manager for Georgia Southern University campuses in Statesboro, Hinesville, and Savannah. Before working in Georgia, she was a consultant for the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

In celebration of Independence Day, I am sharing my annual backflip. Wait- don't get your expectations up. I don't do them often or well. It is the annual backflip that I perform (at request and with great resistance) at my work bestie's (Tara Cox) 4th of July cookout for the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates interns. The whole SSU Marine Sciences family is there- faculty, their children, spouses, students, and even retirees. In the past, I have fussed and declined, fearing that I would look like how I feel, a chubby, clumsy goose with flailing legs. But in recent years, I have come to see it differently. Our interns are freshmen and sophomores who are just embarking on their degrees in the sciences. They haven't hit their hard coursework or major capstone project yet. I do it now, however it comes out- for them to see that anything is possible if you dare to try. You can go to a cookout with your research mentors and a 55-year-old Black marine scientist may do a back flip.

Our country is turning 250 today and it's ours to govern. See something you don't like? Work to change it. We can do hard things.

It was such an honor to be the guest speaker for the 2026 Juneteenth program at the Mary C. Jenkins Community Center in Brevard, NC. Their program was extraordinary - health screenings, free vegetables, live music. And have you been wondering where Matt Gilligan has been? Well, he's on the board of directors and was in charge of the duck derby. 🥰 Brevard is a beautiful community and the hometown of Moms Mabley. I even got to hang out with the mayor after she came to my lecture, Gullah Geechee Culture: An American Heritage Asset.

I am grateful for the experience!

Doing science in plain view scored us a few admirers today. We were practicing drone calibrations when mom Erica drove by with her two littles, one who already proclaimed that she was going to be a marine biologist. So of course they had to stop.

Kudos to a great team of students for their spontaneous mentoring!
