We aren’t always able to share the stories behind the calls we respond to when they happen, but some are worth looking back on.

Firefighters received a call for a home on fire earlier this year. The homeowner was away at work, and crews arrived to find fire throughout the home and garage. Firefighters immediately began attacking the fire and working to get it under control.

As crews entered the home, they noticed a cat scratching post and realized there were probably cats inside.

Between the fire, smoke, and the sight of firefighters entering in full turnout gear, breathing masks, and air tanks, we knew any pets inside were likely frightened and hiding.

Crews searched the home and located four cats:
🐾 Two were found hiding in the garage, where there was heavy smoke.
🐾 One was found hiding underneath a bed.
🐾 The fourth was discovered hiding underneath the kitchen table.

While crews searched for the cats, firefighters successfully extinguished the fire and stopped it from causing further damage.

When the homeowner arrived, her main concern was her cats. Worried, the first thing she asked was, “Are my cats okay?”

We were happy to tell her that all four had been located. ❤️

🐾 : A Kitten Rescue 🐾

This 911 call turned into a unique non-emergency assist for our crew. The family had been hearing a cat meowing nearby but couldn’t determine where the sound was coming from or where the kitten was stuck. They called firefighters for assistance.

Upon arrival, our crew from Truck 75 discovered the kitten inside a planter, approximately 8 feet down in a garden drain pipe. 😳🐱

Our crew improvised with the tools available and, after about 45 minutes of teamwork and persistence, successfully got the little kitty out safely!

Although no one claimed the kitten, thankfully, the family who called for help decided to adopt the furry little rescue. ❤️

June was another busy month for our crews, with 2,510 total emergency responses. That brings our 2026 year-to-date total to 15,415 calls. Apparently, emergencies didn’t get the memo that summer is supposed to be vacation season. From fires and EMS calls to rescues, public assists, inspections, equipment checks, and daily training, our crews stayed on the move!

Thank you to our firefighters, nurse educators, dispatchers, and support staff for their dedication to serving our community 24/7. OCFA Orange County Firefighters City of Santa Ana

This past weekend, we joined the fun at Turning Point Fellowship’s Kids Day, where Truck 76 firefighters bravely volunteered for the dunk tank (the kids didn’t hold back! 💦😄).

Engine 73 firefighters also participated in the OC Safer Summer Pool Party, helping families learn simple but important ways to stay safe around water this summer. 🏊🛟

Thank you to everyone who came out and spent part of your weekend with us.
