🇺🇸 Today, we pause to remember the Americans who never made it home.
Across Erie, Ottawa, and Huron Counties, generations of young men and women left behind their families, farms, schools, factories, and neighborhoods to serve this country. Some were only teenagers, with many others barely any older. Many never got the chance to come back and build the lives they had planned.
From the Civil War to World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and every conflict in between, our communities have felt the weight of that sacrifice. The names etched onto memorials in towns across our district are not just names from history books. They were neighbors, classmates, coworkers, sons, daughters, parents, and friends.
Memorial Day is about honoring those individuals and recognizing the cost of war carried by military families for generations afterward. It is because of their sacrifice that we are able to gather freely with the people we love, speak openly, and participate in our democracy.
As we attend parades, ceremonies, cookouts, and community events this weekend, I hope we all take a quiet moment to reflect on the lives that were lost and the families who continue to carry that loss every day.
To every Gold Star family and every family in Erie, Ottawa, and Huron Counties who has lost a loved one in service to our country, we remember them today and always.
May we never forget their sacrifice. 🕊️
