I like tree limb shadows on the driveway today - that means it's a sun shiny day after several days of dark and overcast skies....as much as we needed the abundant rain. Everyone and everything is happy. Even the "fish in the sky" up at the county road looks happy today. Chickadee nest update coming soon.

A Carolina Chickadee and nest update coming soon. But in the meanwhile I sure enjoy the trickle of added water in Rock Creek with bird sounds in the background just off our driveway. West of Sand Springs.

We are still holding fast at three eggs so this Mama Chickadee is having a small family. She sits on the nest most of the time and doesn't take a break very often...and when she does, she's not gone for long. It's rainy and cool so keeping the eggs warm is important work. So now we're on baby bird watch. I'll study up on that so I can figure what date they should begin hatching.

Looks like we're holding fast at three eggs so far. If it's three still by tomorrow, I guess that is the lucky number for this Chickadee. Mama spends a lot of time sitting on those eggs. It's been a lot of fun observing all of this with our grandson Noah today (Granddad Ray holding him). We quietly took his photo by the box when she was inside the box.

Chickadee Update 3 of 3 - Sunday, April 23rd. - I watched and studied Mama Chickadee late last night as she fidgeted on two eggs (with a third on the way). I imagine that's not very comfortable for such a tiny bird. I was trying to figure out where her little head disappeared to but can see she buries it in her feathers underneath or near one of her wings. (She probably does this for warmth). But after a while, she was able to get in a good enough position to get some rest and sleep. I put a relaxing tune from my phone library behind the video.

Chickadee Update - Update 2 of 3 on 04-23-23

Things are quiet right now and Mama Chickadee is sitting on her three eggs. It was suggested that we could take a poll of those watching the egg laying progress, and guesses can be made how many will be the final count. I've read where the clutch size can be 3 to 10 but more common are 6 to 8. So feel free to guess and put your total in the comments. If you win you will get.....the satisfaction of knowing you were right - ha ha - and the confirmation that you are a good guesser. So I will start it off by putting my guess, my daughter's guess and my husband's guess in the comments.

Carolina Chickadee Mini-Update: the last three mornings have produced three eggs before sunrise-one each morning. A clutch can be 3 to 10 (can you imagine a little bird like that with 10!) So she probably has at least one or two to go. Time will tell! But those are pretty speckled eggs in the nest! Also Oklahoma and Texas are the west side of the boundary for these all-year eastern birds that do not migrate. I know I see Carolina Chickadees all year long around the feeders. Will post more interesting things later.

Welcome to my new page created just today, 4-22-23. I had to put myself down as a category.....so Nature Preserve was as close as I could get. I love Nature and try to Preserve...so good enough! I created this non-commercial personal page to have a little more separation between regular posts and my nature appreciation posts but will still post the same many times on my personal profile. Plus most things I post are happening right outside my window or in the proximity of my window on our rural property in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Hope you enjoy this new page. - Diana Firey

My Little (Carolina) Chickadee(s) periodic Update - For Those Interested and who are Keeping Up: The other day, my brother-in-law reminded me of an old movie star, W.C. Fields' famous expression "My little Chickadee". I had forgotten about that until he mentioned it. There's even a 1940 movie by the title.

But anyway, there are now two eggs, the second probably hatched before sunrise like the first the day before. The clutch size of this bird are 3-10 so there may be a few more before she's done. The mama was on her nest thru the night and just within the past half hour, i took video of video of her making these sounds I'd never had heard before. So I always get online and research anything new. I think she's already what some articles are calling - singing to those eggs. Nesting hens do the same trying to imprint themselves often in their unhatched babies. She will need to sit on those eggs more than usual in this cooler weather. There are other babies I hear thru the camera that are located nearby high inside an eave of our house plus the baaaa-ing of our nearby goats come thru loud and clear thru the camera at feeding time. Before you know it there will be the loud sound of baby birds added as the eggs hatch one by one. The things of God's creation truly amaze me! West of Sand Springs.
