How steady are you on your feet?

You don’t have to wait until after a fall to start thinking about fall prevention.

During Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Vivalon is offering free Fall Risk Assessments with a neurologic physical therapist. Through balance and gait testing, you’ll have an opportunity to better understand how you move, identify areas that may need attention, and learn steps you can take to support your strength and stability.

Think of it as a chance to learn a little more about your body and be proactive about staying active and independent.

Need a ride? Vivalon is providing free round-trip transportation between downtown San Rafael and the Fair, no reservation required! Shuttles leave from Vivalon at 930 Tamalpais Avenue approximately every 30 minutes, beginning at 8:30 am. The last shuttle departs the Fair at 3:15 pm.

What do three years of data tell us about falls in Marin County?

On Tuesday, September 22, Vivalon is bringing together three local experts to look at what happens when an older adult falls, from the countywide data, to the moment first responders arrive, to the hospital and trauma setting.

During Knowledge is Balance: A Community Conversation on Fall Risks, Recovery, and Prevention, you’ll hear from:

Bria Larson, MPH, Epidemiologist with Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, who will share findings from a three-year research and analysis project examining falls across Marin County.

Jason Hatfield, San Rafael Battalion Chief, who will take us to the front lines of emergency response and share what happens when firefighters respond to a fall.

Jessica Lacanlale, MSN, RN, PHN, MarinHealth, who will share data and perspective on what happens when a fall results in injury and hospitalization.

Together, these perspectives will help us better understand how falls are affecting our community and what we can learn to help prevent them.

🐾 Help feed a beloved companion!

We’re grateful to the Marin Society of Artists for generously hosting a pet food drive benefiting Vivalon’s Nourish for Pets program during their Colorful Expressions exhibition, September 2–26.

Nourish for Pets grew from something our Meals on Wheels team noticed firsthand: some homebound clients were sharing their own meals with their pets. Today, the program helps older adults and people with disabilities care for the animals who provide so much companionship, comfort, and joy.

Stop by the gallery and help fill the donation barrels with canned pet food (no kibble) or pet supplies such as collars, leashes, and toys.

🎨 While you’re there, enjoy Colorful Expressions, featuring work by Marin Society of Artists members alongside artwork by several talented Vivalon members.

Join us for the reception on Friday, September 11, from 5–8 p.m. at the MSA Gallery, 1515 Third St.
