Candidates must meet the following state requirements to run for office:
In addition to the City requirements listed, the following are the requirements listed by the State of Texas:
Be a United States Citizen
Be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable
Have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be: totally mentally incapacitated, or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote
Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities
Candidates must meet the following city requirements to run for office:
Be a qualified voter of the city
Have the principal physical residence for at least one year preceding the election within the corporate limits of San Marcos
Shall not have a financial interest in the sale to the city of any land, materials, supplies or service, outside of the person's position with the city;
Shall remain current on all financial obligations to the city relating to the duties of the council member.
NOTE: Shall maintain the principal physical residence within the corporate limits of San Marcos throughout the term of office.
