Save the Dates — Thy Neighbor

Thy Neighbor, a new documentary by filmmaker Eliza Hemenway, tells the story of the Joe Rodota Trail — a mile of tents that became home to hundreds of our unsheltered neighbors, and what it looked like to actually live there.

It's an eyewitness account of the struggles of those who lived it, and the community that came together to support them.

It is where our small grassroots organization, Sonoma County Acts of Kindness, began back in November 2019, with so many neighbors showing up to support our community, and so many more that have continued the legacy in the years since.

Thank you, Eliza, for your years of work, dedication, and fight to bring this film to life. 💛

❄️ Winter Is Right Around the Corner — Help Us Keep Our Unsheltered Neighbors Warm ❄️

Winter is right around the corner, rain is expected to increase soon, and nights and mornings are already very cold. We're gearing up to meet this harsh winter head-on, plus our two biggest holiday events of the year in November and December, where we serve traditional holiday meals and provide supplies to 150-175 unsheltered neighbors at each event.

From the very start, we've been powered entirely by community support — neighbors like you, and hundreds of volunteers that have been involved over the years. We're a grassroots, all-volunteer organization with no paid staff and no government funding.

Almost seven years ago, a small group of neighbors decided that no one should face the cold, or living on the streets, alone in our community — and ever since, it's been community support that has made that promise possible.

Your donation helps us purchase the critical items our community needs most.

💛 As an all-volunteer organization with minimal overhead, nearly every dollar you give goes directly into supplies for our unsheltered neighbors. We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your donation is tax-deductible.

🌟 Current Volunteer Openings 🌟

We're looking to fill a few key roles on our team!

📌 Already signed up before but we didn't have an opening at the time? Please sign up again if you're available now!

1. Saturday Meal Maker
📅 Commitment: ~4-5 hours per week
🛒 What it involves:

● Picking up supplies at our storage
● Preparing 80 sack meals at home
● Having meals ready for delivery beginning 3:00-3:30 pm
☆ Requires a Food Handler Certificate (we can help cover the cost if needed!)

2. Saturday Delivery Person
📅 Commitment: Saturdays, 3:00-3:30 pm start, roughly 3-4 hours
🚗 What it involves:

● Delivering 80 meals directly to our unsheltered neighbors within a defined area of Santa Rosa
● Meeting people where they are on the street
☆ Requires both driving and walking
● 1-2 weeks of training on Sundays to start

3. Wednesday Delivery Person (starting September 30th)
📅 Commitment: Wednesdays, 3:00-3:30 pm start, roughly 2-3 hours
🚗 What it involves:

● Picking up 40 meals at the kitchen where they're prepared
● Delivering meals directly to our unsheltered neighbors, meeting people where they are on the street
☆ Requires both driving and walking
● 1-2 weeks of training on Wednesdays to start

4. Wednesday Cookie Baker
📅 Commitment: Wednesdays, 9:00 am start, roughly 2-3 hours
🍪 What it involves:

● Baking 200 cookies at our kitchen each week
● Cookies go out with our Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday meals
☆ Requires standing for the duration of the shift
☆ Requires a Food Handler Certificate (we can help cover the cost if needed!)

Our friend Kelley at The Hole Thing is partnering with us to help collect warm clothing and coats for our unsheltered neighbors. Donations can be dropped off during business hours beginning September 1st. Great time to schedule a piercing or tattoo appointment too!

We’re excited to be partnering with Shady Oak Brewing Company to help keep our unsheltered neighbors warm and dry this winter!

Shady Oak has generously opened their doors as a donation drop-off location for our Cold Weather Coat & Warm Clothing Collection, and we’re so grateful for their support.

When you stop by to drop off your donation, it’s also a great excuse to stay awhile and enjoy Shady Oak! Grab one of their beers or ciders, play some pinball, and if you time your visit with one of their food truck days, grab a bite to eat too. 🍺🕹️

Shady Oak has a warm, welcoming, laid-back atmosphere that makes it a great place to gather with friends and support a local business while doing something kind for our community.

Every coat and warm layer donated helps us provide much-needed protection from the cold and rain to our unsheltered neighbors.

Smoke from the Woodside Fire hit Santa Rosa and our surrounding areas hard today, making air quality a serious concern—especially for our vulnerable unsheltered neighbors. 😷💨

​Karla and our incredible donation team hit the ground running, distributing N95 masks across the community to make sure everyone stays safe, protected, and breathing easier.
