Protect Our Seniors: Local Contractor Sentenced for Financial Elder Abuse

A stark reminder to look out for vulnerable neighbors: A Smith County contractor was recently sentenced to five years' probation and 240 hours of community service and ordered to pay over $64,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to financial elder abuse.

Investigators found that the contractor tricked an elderly Tyler homeowner into paying for unnecessary roof repairs.

Quick tips to protect older homeowners from scams:

Verify before you sign: Always get a second opinion from an independent, trusted professional before committing to major repairs, especially if a contractor cold-calls or shows up uninvited.

Never feel pressured: Legitimate contractors won't rush you into signing a contract or demand full payment upfront.

Stay connected: Check in on aging family members and neighbors when contractors are working on their property.

If you suspect someone in our community is being targeted or taken advantage of, don't hesitate to report it to local law enforcement or Adult Protective Services.

TAKE ACTION: Do your part to stop voter suppression by signing up as an Election Protection volunteer today >>

Voters trying to prepare for these changes will face the same rising misinformation on social media we’ve seen for over a decade, along with the usual last-minute dirty tricks designed to keep them from the polls.

That’s why every election year, the Election Protection coalition recruits, trains, and deploys thousands of volunteers in every state. These trained, nonpartisan volunteers serve as voters’ first line of defense against confusing voting rules, outdated infrastructure, rampant misinformation, and needless obstacles to the ballot box.

Today, I’m personally asking you to join the Protect the Vote 2026 campaign.

We’ll provide all the training and resources you need to assist voters, and there’s a supportive community of fellow volunteers who’ll have your back every step of the way.

There’s a role for everyone, whether it’s helping voters from home, assisting voters safely in person, or tracking online disinformation. Sign up today >>

Volunteer Now

Nonpartisan Election Protection volunteers like you will be voters’ first line of defense against restrictive election laws, changes to polling locations or procedures, or anything else that could silence their voices.

We’ll help you find the best way to get involved, whether that’s monitoring polling places, watchdogging social media for disinformation and voters in need of help, or reaching out to voters to make sure they know their rights.

Unfortunately, voters this year will face obstacles that have no place in a modern democracy, and these barriers to voting will hit communities of color the hardest.

We all know about the problems facing our democracy: confusing, state-by-state voting rules, rampant disinformation, and more. You can be a part of the solution by volunteering as an Election Volunteer today!

If you agree that every eligible voter deserves to have their voice count, you can take action from home or in person by serving as a nonpartisan Election Protection volunteer.

Dangerous heat for the LA Region is expected from Tuesday, August 25, to Friday, August 28.

An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for the entire Los Angeles region, beginning Tuesday, August 25 at 10:00 AM through Friday, August 28 at 8:00 PM.

Forecasted temperatures are expected to reach 80-90 degrees along the coast, 100-110 degrees in valleys and lower mountains, and 90-100 degrees in Downtown LA and other interior areas.

In addition to the Extreme Heat Warning, NWS has issued a Red Flag Warning for the mountains and foothills bordering the northern portion of the City, including the Santa Susana and San Gabriel Mountains beginning Tuesday, August 25, at 10:00 AM through Friday, August 28, at 3:00 PM.

The mountains and foothills will see elevated fire weather conditions that favor fast-moving fires and active fire behavior throughout the week. Those in the impacted area should be careful to avoid actions that could start a fire and make sure they are ready to evacuate if a fire were to threaten their home.

During this heat event, it is important to be proactive about heat exposure. As temperatures rise, the City of Los Angeles urges Angelenos to plan and prepare to avoid heat exhaustion in their communities and for themselves. Call 311 to identify the cooling facilities closest to you, or visit the Cool Spots LA App.

Keep cool by identifying and resting in shade or a building with air conditioning and drinking plenty of water. If you do not live in an air-conditioned building, visit a public library, recreation facility, senior center, or other public air-conditioned building near you. Drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors or in the shade, stay in a cool area, and check up on relatives and neighbors, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions. Check on neighbors or others who may be sensitive to heat. Never leave young children, the elderly, or pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, for any length of time.

You can find an updated list of open cooling centers at this link: https://emergency.lacity.gov/heat

Take extra precautions if you work, exercise, or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. See images below for an explanation of signs and symptoms. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSHA recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments and to stay hydrated. Employers must provide access to sufficient water. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. If you suspect a heat stroke, this is an emergency! Call 911. Non-emergency information can be found by calling 311.
