Mediterrasian Landscapes Mediterrasian Landscapes was founded by Richard Held in January of 2004. Having grown up in New York City, he was interested in urban spaces.

Richard's love of art and nature led him to attend the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, School of Landscape Architecture. He studied the ways that design could affect people’s feelings and behavior. He watched the ways in which children learned from their environments and began to design playscapes. Valuing energy conservation and preservation of the envi

ronment, he moved to the west coast and designed passive and active solar home heating systems for several years. After this, his fascination with nature and design led him to take up residence in Japan. He observed the ways the Japanese elegantly designed with nature in their gardens. He liked the way the elements of a Japanese garden sequentially unfolded, presenting the visitor with view after view, each a myriad of exquisite textures in a lush, verdant color spectrum. Richard then began to apply these principles to gardens that he created for small spaces in San Francisco, as well as in larger spaces in Northern California, where he lived on ranches during the next phase of his varied experiential training. Ranch living taught him much about gardening, landscaping, building, irrigation, and raising sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens. Returning once again to the Bay Area, he learned about the plants that thrive in the Mediterranean climate of San Francisco while studying with the excellent horticulture department at City College of San Francisco. Combining his background in both Eastern and Western design, horticulture, and environmental studies, he created a landscape design/installation company, Mediterrasian Landscapes. Years in Business

As a State of California licensed landscape contractor, our landscape designer will work directly with you to incorporate your ideas and style preferences, using the specific climate and natural characteristics of your space and your family's needs to create your custom landscape design. Our professional team can then provide you with any level of support required in the installation and maintenance of your garden.
