Today on the anniversary of his birth, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Sylvester James (September 6, 1947 – December 16, 1988).

Known simply as Sylvester, the groundbreaking singer and performer became one of the defining voices of disco and an enduring LGBTQ+ cultural icon. With his extraordinary falsetto, flamboyant style and unapologetic stage presence, he rose to international fame with hits including “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” and “Dance (Disco Heat).” A beloved figure in San Francisco’s q***r community, Sylvester challenged conventions of gender and sexuality through both his music and public persona. He died of AIDS-related complications in 1988 at the age of 41.

Today on the anniversary of her birth, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Jane Addams (September 6, 1860 – May 21, 1935).

A pioneering social reformer, activist and author, Jane Addams co-founded Hull House in Chicago, one of the most influential settlement houses in the United States, providing education, childcare, health services and support to immigrants and working-class families. A leading advocate for women’s suffrage, labor reform and peace, she became the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Addams shared her life for decades with Mary Rozet Smith, a relationship widely recognized by historians as a committed same-sex partnership.

“Alioto’s Plaza is a wonderful addition to the continuing revitalization of Fisherman’s Wharf,” said Bri Maughan, Executive Director of the Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District. “Beautiful, welcoming public spaces like this are an important part of what makes the wharf both a world-famous destination and a living, working San Francisco neighborhood. We’re thrilled to see this historic location renewed as a place where residents, visitors, and the entire Fisherman’s Wharf community can gather, relax, and enjoy our waterfront.”

Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco recently unveiled a new public plaza in the place of a historic restaurant.

On October 10, a baseball stadium will become a field of kindness as Boo2Bullying brings its fourth annual “Kick Bullying to the Curb” Wellness Festival and Celebrity Kickball Game to Palm Springs Power Stadium. The free, family-friendly gathering will connect young people and their families with practical wellness resources while celebrating teamwork, inclusion and the simple but powerful truth that every child deserves to feel safe, valued and heard.

It's not often that the New York Post has nice things to say about San Francisco, but, we'll take it! Hats off to everyone concerned, especially to Marisa Rodriguez and her team at the Union Square Alliance, to Rodney Fong and everyone at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and to Alex Bastian and the Hotel Council of San Francisco. It takes a team.

"Investors took note — and some placed their bets on the future of San Francisco. Those bets are paying off. It can’t hurt that San Francisco, and the Bay Area generally, are the beneficiaries of the boom in artificial intelligence (AI) — a boom that began under Mayor Lurie's predecessor, London Breed. But regardless of who gets the credit, the fact is that law-and-order, market-friendly policies are clearly working. Recently, Mayor Lurie announced that outside organizations providing homeless services for the city would have to renew their contracts, to ensure oversight and accountability. Lurie is proving that moderate policies work. Other big-city Democrats should start paying attention."

Ahoy! It started foggy and misty but the sun broke out just in time as San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie joined a host of other worthies and community members to cut the ribbon on Fisherman's Wharf ’s new view embracing Alioto Plaza. In addition to a blessing of our fishing fleet, we even had a mermaid show up.

Today on the anniversary of his birth, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Roger Casement (September 1, 1864 – August 3, 1916).

An Irish diplomat, humanitarian, and nationalist, Casement became internationally renowned for exposing brutal abuses of Indigenous peoples in the Congo Free State and the Amazon’s Putumayo region. Later a passionate advocate for Irish independence, he was convicted of treason and executed by the British government in 1916. A gay man whose sexuality was used against him during his trial and appeals for clemency, Casement remains an enduring figure in the histories of human rights, Irish independence, and LGBTQ+ identity.
