Love Balboa Park, a California Non-Profit Corporation

Love Balboa Park, a California Non-Profit Corporation The Mission of Love Balboa Park is to Preserve, Protect, Maintain, Improve and Celebrate San Diego's Balboa Park. That neglect must be stopped.

"Love Balboa Park" (TM) has been our trade and service mark since 2013. Love Balboa Park is one of the few Park organizations that aggressively challenges local politicians to actually support the "Jewel" of the City. Press conferences in front of crumbling buildings have done nothing to actually meet the needs of the Park. Long-term major financing for these needs, native-plant restoration of th

e Florida Canyon Nature Preserve, and a focus on the future are all issues conveniently ignored by elected officials. George Marston put it best in his letter sent to our local newspaper paper in 1925: " the time is coming when the building of hospitals and schoolhouses or even libraries and museums must cease or else we shall have a city there instead of a park." As planner John Nolen wrote to the City in November, 1926,

""No institutions, religious, educational or philanthropic, in the park or likely to be placed there, can in my opinion represent the interest of the whole of the population of San Diego now or in the future." Balboa Park is under constant assault by Politicians' fiscal & physical neglect, those who want to strip its historical fabric for "Improvements". Politicians, developers and advocates of "self-sustaining" parks have advocated hotels and retail development of Inspiration Point. Others would cover dedicated parklands with more pavement, charter schools, Vendor Arnachy, for-profit Ferris Wheels and other favored private projects. Now the "Forver Balboa Park" group, formerly the Balboa Park Conservancy, is proposing the landmark Botanical Building be converted to a revenue-generating events venue. A "Win-Win, Public/Private. Self-Sustaining" way to pay for a much needed restoration, while limiting public access to this treasure, reducing the space devoted to plantings and potentially ruining its unique Art Nouveau look and feel. Love Balboa Park celebration events, advocacy work and potential legal efforts for 2022 need YOUR active participation, volunteer assistance and generous support in time and effort. YOU can make a difference now by becoming a Love Balboa Park Member, by volunteering and by SHARING this with all your Facebook friends. The Park needs YOUR voice and support NOW. It's been more than 100 years since former president Theodore Roosevelt stood on the platform at the brand new Spreckels Organ Pavilion and made what he called "an earnest plea" to San Diego. The Panama-California Exposition, he said, "is so beautiful that I hope that not only will you keep these buildings running for another year but you will keep these buildings of rare, phenomenal taste and beauty permanently." The park's relatively low priority is ironic, considering how much emphasis city officials have been putting on the tourism, The Park attracts more than 12 million visitors annually, more than any other San Diego attraction other than all beaches combined. The city Politicians are ignoring this funding need, making a total $460,000 appropriation in next year's budget for all Park building and and infrastructure needs. Become a part of San Diego history ! Support the BPHA and help Love Balboa Park [TM 2016].

Historically Gloria's favorite self- serving political puffery has been a big Photo Opp Press Conference created by Toad's costly gaggle of Spin Doctors, photographers, Flack Catchers, videographers and creative writers. The Paid Parking scam in our Balboa Park has not been the subject of any of Gloria's scenic trumpets. Even he knows this has been a tragic, foolish, costly, and massively unpopular error in judgment.

How can you put a positive spin on monetizing Balboa Park?

Free Tuesdays at museums now come with a large Parking Convenience Fee. Free Sunday Organ Pavilion concerts are no longer free. Senior walk- abouts in the Park are now too costly for many. A casual family picnic has become a luxury for many families.

Well done Mr. Mayor and City Council. Not so much.

The Ash Street $300,000,000 debacle- with Gloria as a lead cheerleader- was the largest contributor to the deficit giving ride to the "need" for Paid Parking in our Park.

Additional incompetence gave rise to the foolish 14- part fee schedule, exceptions and crazy administration of the fees. Out of City residents, City residents, Park employees, Park volunteers who live in/ out of the City, Zoo employees who live in the County but not the City, bridge players, ballroomdancers, seniors, SDHS Students... Only a City bureaucracy could have thought this could function.

Stupidity was the source of attempting to make our Park a golden goose. Monetizing the Park was and is idiocy.

The Balboa Park Committee of 100 and Love Balboa Park oppose the City of San Diego's proposal to charge for parking in Balboa Park, a public space that should remain free and open to all. New fees would create barriers for families, students, and residents. Equity and access must be protected.

The San Diego City Council is scheduled to review the proposal at its meeting on July 28, 2025, at 1 PM, Agenda items 6p0 and 601. Community members are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives. For more information about the meeting, visit https://sandiego.hylandcloud.com/211agendaonlinecouncil.

Demand City Council Halt Paid Parking in Balboa Park Area Balboa Park is a cherished haven for the residents of San Diego, offering one of the few free places to spend quality time with friends, family, and pets. This treasure trove of culture, natural beauty, and community spirit is meant to be accessible to all. However, recent decisions have already made access more challenging by eliminating 300 street parking spaces. Now, the city council's plan to charge for parking in Balboa Park, Morley Field, and along adjacent residential areas adds insult to injury. The imposition of parking fees is not just a minor inconvenience—it is a significant burden, especially for working families who are already stretched thin by the high cost of living in San Diego. The cost of living in our city makes it difficult for many residents to bear additional expenses, and paid parking fees would only exacerbate this problem.
