San Dieguito River Park The San Dieguito River Park is a 55 mile regional greenway from Volcan Mountain to Del Mar.

The San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority is a local government agency formed by the County of San Diego and the Cities of Del Mar, Escondido, Poway, San Diego, and Solana Beach to create a natural open space park system in the San Dieguito River Valley.

🦋🐍 Spreading some of that park ranger magic with the help of our volunteers at this year’s Grape Day Festival! We brought the wildlife, the creepy crawlies, and our abounding excitement about the outdoors to the community of Escondido this weekend. It was a day full of learning about our local wildlife and protected watershed, interactive games, adventurous prizes, and sneak peaks about our upcoming events! Thank you to the community for showing up and getting excited about the work we do to ensure your access to open spaces and trails, while protecting the land and those that inhabit it. POV: You walk the San Dieguito River Park Lagoon Trail on a warm summer morning.

The San Dieguito River Park Lagoon Trail is a segment of the SDRP’s Coast to Crest Trail. It spans 1.5 to 2.5 miles one-way, depending on your starting point, totaling 3 to 5 miles round trip. This trail is accessible to hikers and bikers, with limited equestrian use. The Lagoon Trail is a flat and wide dirt path with a 0.15 mile wooden boardwalk, all of which is well maintained by our dedicated staff and volunteers! Catch some scenic views, spot our lagoon critters, and even follow along an interpretive walk with QR codes numbered 1- 21 along the trail to access educational content!

Oh deer! It’s a wildlife takeover! Do you put pictures of local critters on your fridge too…or is that just us? We have amazing visual documentation of deer in the SDRP through our collaboration with the San Diego Tracking Team. Our teams station wildlife camera traps around our park, which are motion-activated, leading to a diverse set of wildlife photoshoots (but today the deer get the spotlight). These cameras are typically established off-trail to capture documentation of wildlife, so you are unlikely to be caught in a photo montage. We use this visual data to track changes in animal populations, study wildlife behavior and movement patterns, identify animal species, and monitor endangered and invasive species. This form of data collection allows us to gather crucial information on the health of our park and its inhabitants without disrupting wildlife. This knowledge informs our conservation and restoration efforts, allowing us to make informed decisions to bolster the long-term health of these ecosystems so that you and all the critters can enjoy these natural spaces!

Join us Saturday, August 15, at 9:00am at the San Dieguito Lagoon Trail for our monthly Roaming with Rangers! Learn about the history of our lagoon and the native plants and wildlife that inhabit its ecosystem with Ranger Alex. 🌿 🐟

🚙 Meet at the Ranger Station Parking Lot and walk 3 miles with us to the boardwalk and back and become immersed in our local lagoon habitat. See you there! 🥾
