Good morning all and happy Friday! Just a reminder that we have a hike going on tomorrow at Lake Hodges. Immediately followed by lunch at Stone brewery (11:15).

You should all come out and get your steps in before it gets too warm. At least that’s what the San Diegans say.

Also, don’t forget about our Canada Day picnic coming up at the end of this month. Please check the events tab for sign-up information.

Great night of hockey with a few fellow Canadians (and friends). You all enjoying the series?

Hey Canadians in San Diego β€” it's "Community & Culture" time! 🍁

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§ FATHER'S DAY IS JUNE 21 β€” AND IT'S THE SAME IN BOTH COUNTRIES πŸŽ‰

Good news: no calendar confusion this year. Canada and the US both celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday of June.

BUT β€” a few things your San Diego dad friends won't understand about your Canadian Father's Day traditions:

πŸ’ Back home, Father's Day is deeply intertwined with hockey playoffs. Depending on the year, your dad was either celebrating a Stanley Cup win or silently mourning a first-round exit. Both involved a lot of chips.
🌿 Lawn mowing. Father's Day in Canada coincidentally falls right when the lawn becomes a jungle after the spring melt. Dad's gift was often… doing the lawn with him.
🍺 The BBQ fired up regardless of weather. Rain, cold, threatening clouds β€” none of it mattered. Dad had tongs and a mission.
β˜€οΈ The nice thing about celebrating here? The weather actually cooperates. Every single year.

Shoutout to all the Canadian Dads in San Diego β€” raising kids who say "eh" and "sorry" in a city full of sunshine. That takes a special kind of strength. πŸ’ͺ

Tag a Canadian dad in San Diego who deserves a shoutout! πŸ‘‡

πŸ›οΈ CROSS-BORDER SHOPPING & SHIPPING β€” THE CANADIAN SAN DIEGO GUIDE

Living so close to both Canada AND Mexico makes San Diego a uniquely interesting place for cross-border life. Here's what the community has learned:

πŸ“¦ GETTING CANADIAN STUFF SHIPPED HERE:
β€’ Most Canadian retailers won't ship to US addresses β€” use a Canadian forwarding service like Chit Chats or ShipTime to get a Canadian address that forwards to you
β€’ Amazon.ca ships some items to the US β€” check item by item
β€’ Family visiting from Canada? Have them pack the Ketchup Chips, Coffee Crisps, and Aero bars. This is non-negotiable.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ SAN DIEGO'S SECRET WEAPON β€” TIJUANA IS RIGHT THERE:
β€’ Dental work, prescription glasses, and some medications are significantly cheaper across the border β€” many San Diegans (Canadian and local alike) use TJ regularly
β€’ The SENTRI pass is worth it if you cross often β€” shorter border wait times significantly

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ GOING BACK TO CANADA TO VISIT:
β€’ Know your Canadian duty-free allowances before you pack the car (it goes both ways)
β€’ You can bring back goods into the US β€” keep receipts for anything over $800 USD per person

Pro tip: this community group is one of the best resources around for cross-border life hacks.

Hey Canadians in San Diego β€” it's "Community & Culture" time! 🍁

🍁 THINGS ONLY CANADIANS IN SAN DIEGO UNDERSTAND

A love letter to the specific experience of being Canadian in America's Finest City:

πŸ˜… Accidentally saying "sorry" to a chair you bumped into and two Americans nearby thinking you were apologizing to them

🌑️ San Diegans are wearing North Face in 18°C. You are in shorts. You will always be in shorts.

πŸ₯€ You said "pop" at a restaurant and the server said "sorry?" and you said "sorry?" back and nobody knew what was happening

🍁 You have explained what a loonie is approximately 400 times

β›½ You still instinctively calculate gas prices in litres even though everything here is in gallons

πŸ’ You've tried to explain hockey playoff intensity to someone who has never watched hockey. You have failed.

🍟 You have a Tim Hortons radar in your brain that activates when you cross the border back into Canada. It fires up somewhere around the 401.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ And yet β€” you chose this city. And this city is pretty great.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Canadians in San Diego πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Would there be any interest in organizing a group outing to see Come From Away at the Moonlight Theatre when it comes to San Diego this September?

The award-winning musical tells the incredible true story of the 38 planes that were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, and the small Canadian community that welcomed nearly 7,000 stranded passengers with open arms. It's a heartwarming story of kindness, generosity, and the best of what it means to be Canadian.

πŸ“… Performance Dates: September 9–26

Before I look into group tickets, I'd like to gauge interest from our Canadian community.

If you'd be interested in attending, please comment below or send me a message. If we have enough interest, I'll explore group seating and possibly organize a pre-show meet-up.

Who would be interested in joining us? What's your connection to Newfoundland or the events of 9/11? 🍁

Happy Monday! 🍁 Here is a Useful Canada-in-San Diego post to get your week rolling.

☁️ JUNE GLOOM β€” YOUR OFFICIAL CANADIAN SURVIVAL GUIDE

Welcome to June in San Diego, where locals are DISTRAUGHT by "June Gloom" β€” cloudy mornings, overcast skies, and the audacity of temperatures below 25Β°C.

We, of course, are fine. We are more than fine. We are thriving.

Here's how June actually works in San Diego:
🌫️ Mornings: Marine layer rolls in overnight β€” cool, grey, and honestly peaceful
β˜€οΈ By midday: Almost always burns off to full sunshine by noon or 1pm
🌑️ Highs: Around 22–24Β°C (72–75Β°F). Zero rain. Basically zero.
🌊 Ocean temps: Starting to warm up β€” getting swimmable for those of us who've survived Canadian lakes

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ CANADIAN PRO TIPS FOR JUNE:
β€’ Morning hikes at Torrey Pines or Cowles Mountain in the mist are absolutely stunning β€” locals skip them, we show up
β€’ San Diego County Fair opens at Del Mar mid-June β€” think a very sunny, taco-forward version of a Canadian fall fair
β€’ Free outdoor concerts start up all over the city β€” Balboa Park, Coronado, and more
β€’ La Jolla Shores: leopard sharks begin arriving in June β€” totally harmless and an incredible snorkel experience

Reminder: June here is still better than August in most of Canada. Enjoy every second. β˜€οΈ
