CRISIS INTERVENTION, VOLUNTEER SERVICES UNIT
The mission of San Diego Police Department Crisis Intervention is to provide short-term emotional and logistical support to individuals in the City of San Diego who have experienced traumatic incidents, or potentially traumatic incidents, which fall under the jurisdiction of the San Diego Police Department.
The Crisis Intervention Team began in 1987. It consists of nearly 100 well trained community members who respond at the request of SDPD personnel and other first responders. Crisis Interventionists act as a liaison between emergency personnel and the victims and/or the survivors of traumatic incidents. In the aftermath of a crisis, people often feel helpless and confused. Research illustrates that the survivors’ experience in the first few hours of a trauma can significantly influence how that tragedy will impact the rest of their lives.
Crisis Interventionists do their best to respond as quickly as possible. The team is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They respond to nearly 700 incidents a year and in 2016 assisted over 3,600 individuals.
Crisis Intervention Team Members are trained to assist in the following incidents:
Natural Death Su***de Homicides
SIDS Traffic collisions/Fatalities Death notifications
Robbery Burglary Violent Crimes
Other traumatic Incidents
