SLiM Sober Life in the Military (SLiM) is a peer-led support, discussion, and networking group. SLiM has been approved for NMCSDs DAPA aftercare program.

Disclaimer: SLiM is not an NMCSD affiliated group. Sober Life in the Military (SLiM) is a weekly peer-led, support, discussion, and networking group held in the chapel on board Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD). SLiM is not a 12-step meeting. SLiM is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent addiction or behavioral and/or mental maladies. SLiM does not serve as legal counsel. SLiM has

been approved to be an integral part of NMCSD Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA) Aftercare Program as an on-base alternative to private AA/NA meetings. As such, any claims of illegal drug use or break of abstinence without notification to DAPA, will be reported to the proper authority. Anonymity is the foundation of AA/NA meetings and any person with a burning desire to disclose such information is strongly encouraged to attend these meetings. San Diego AA meeting list can be found here: http://www.aasandiego.org/. The mission of SLiM is to bring together military members who have chosen a sober way of life through active recovery. Many of us have found difficulty assimilating back into active duty after our alcohol/substance abuse. Here, we can share our experiences on how we struggled and persevered through military-specific challenges such as: deployment, relocation, leave and liberty, going back home, personal and work relationships, and other miscellaneous military-related issues. Persons in active recovery with at least one year of sobriety guide this group- we need you! Contact us now! Weekly meetings consist of discussions, readings, handouts and/or activities in relation to recovery. AA-approved literature will be used as well as other materials related to recovery. These meetings are held during the end of the traditional work day; attendance will be in CIVILIAN CLOTHES ONLY. Uniforms and/or insignia of any kind is prohibited. Food is authorized however, it is the responsibility of the group to uphold high housekeeping standards in respect of the chapel. Abusive language and gestures will not be tolerated. This is a judgement-free zone and any person piercing this atmosphere will be swiftly removed from the group and reported immediately to the proper authority.

Hello SLiM family. In order to reach more of our brothers and sisters needing support in their recovery or to start their path of recovery we have started a SLiM group as well. The group is linked to this page so if you'd like to join just go to the groups and click on the tab. It will take you directly to the group or you can search Sober Life in the Military (SLiM).

Tomorrow is a day dedicated to remembering our fallen. This weekend also unofficially kicks-off the Summer Season. We understand the redundancy of "Don't Drink and Drive", and "Keep What You've Earned". These are phrases to be taken seriously, however, if you are to remember anything this summer, please know there is always someone to call when in a tough spot. Whether it is an Uber, a friend, a co-worker... If you did not make a plan ahead of time, make a plan before time runs out. Things happen and not all events go accordingly.
Also, the reverse scenario is just as vital: answer the call. Be the hero you have preached about. Life is too precious.
Hope to see you Wednesday.

Here at SLiM, we understand that not everyone who attends SARP is an alcoholic and/or addict; but there are underlying reasons and circumstances as to why they were recommended.
What do we do once the substance has been removed from our lives?
At our weekly SLiM meetings, we have been focusing on emotional sobriety and currently reading the book, "12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery: Avoiding Relapse Through Self-Awareness and Right Action" by Allen Berger.
Allen Berger, PhD, is a popular public speaker and nationally recognized expert on the science of recovery- for he is also in recovery.
You can purchase this book (digitally and/or hard copy) or attend our next meeting to read along with us! We reconvene on 17 May!
