Did you know in the U.S. organic materials comprise 30% of solid waste sent to landfills? Why does this matter? Because when organic waste decomposes in the landfills without oxygen it generates methane, a greenhouse gas 28-36 times more powerful at trapping heat than CO2, and it is a big contributor to global warming.
Every little action can contribute to the solution to slow down global warming.
Here are some tips to start a compost program at work.
• Audit your breakroom: Start with coffee grounds and fruit peels, they make up a big chunk of office waste. ☕
• Pick a partner: Connect with a commercial composting service or find a local drop off location that accepts compost materials.
• Tools: Get a sealed, odor-proof bin and clearly label it.
• Educate: Host a lunch and teach your staff about the value of composting and what goes in the compost bin.
Did you know that diverting food waste from the landfill creates a healthier green environment as compost-rich soil provides more nutrients for plants and vegetation? And it can hold up to 2.5 times more water than traditional soil, helping ecosystems resist drought and reduce heavy rain runoff.

Ditch the keys, grab the breeze!

Today is National Bike to Workday – A win-win for sustainability and your health.

Safety First! - Helmet, proper clothes and shoes, water bottle, good brakes and good tires.

Biking for 10 miles can reduce your carbon footprint by roughly 2.5 kg of CO2.

Replacing one daily car trip with cycling can cut about 0.5 tons of CO2 over a year – as much carbon absorbed by 30 trees

Skip the parking lot. Bike racks are usually near the front of the building and IN THE SHADE.

Regular cycling can lower risk of cardiovascular disease - 20 miles per week can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50%.

Cyclists report 15% fewer prescriptions for depression or anxiety and also report more energy.

Think About it…. Recycling requires a thoughtful process. Are the items you recycle at home the same as those you can recycle at work? Usually, it varies. So let's think about your workplace for now.

Has your management company or your private hauler made it clear what materials that accept and what they don’t accept? If you’re unsure, is it tempting to just throw everything in the trash? Easier, yes but better, definitely no.

Even the smallest amount of material that you can prevent from going to the landfill by recycling is a step worth taking. Knowing the acceptable materials is key to an effective recycling program in your workplace! If you're unsure what goes where, reach out to your property management company or your recycling hauler for clarification!

Once you identify the acceptable materials to recycle share the information with your co-workers by creating signage with the name and images of the acceptable items.
