Your Honor Guard and the Pipe & Drum Brigade are enroute to Colorado Springs for the 40th Annual IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial. If you are headed to the Memorial, be sure to visit us in tent city for complimentary breakfast tacos or lunch sandwiches courtesy of our 624 BBQ Team on Friday and Saturday.

You may have heard us mention Travis Maher at this morning's memorial. Travis was an Austin Fire Department firefighter and new Rescue Specialist with Texas A&M Task Force 1 when he deployed to Ground Zero alongside San Antonio Fire Department firefighters Nim Kidd, Frank Wilborn, Dennis Meier, Pat Dubose, Rick Baring, and Shane George. In the years since, Travis rose to the rank of Battalion Chief and served as Task Force Leader, mentoring countless Texas first responders and leading many of us on life saving deployments across Texas and the United States. Travis passed away on December 2, 2022 due to cancer associated with his service at Ground Zero.

It is with a heavy heart that Odessa Fire Rescue announces the passing of Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Handlin.

Eric passed away at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026. He had just completed 25 years of service with OFR on July 2 and was 53 years old.

Eric dedicated a significant part of his life to serving OFR and the Odessa community, and his loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, current members, and our retired OFR family.

Services are being planned and will be announced over the next few days as those details are finalized.

Please keep Eric’s family, friends, and the entire OFR family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Long-time Honor Guard member Bobby Ford has passed away. Bobby retired in 2022 after serving 35 years with our department. In addition to his decades of dedicated service to our Honor Guard team, he was a role model and mentor for hundreds of paramedics throughout our department. He was extremely active in our Union, serving as the PR Committee chairman, Athletic Committee chairman, Fiesta parades coordinator, Cancer Awareness promoter, and so much more. We will truly miss his ever-present smile, his jaunty uniform hat, and custom-length coat sleeve. His services will be this coming Monday and Tuesday; we will render retiree Honors in accordance with his wife's wishes.

We are honored that the Mabank Fire Department allowed our members to come to Mabank and share their burden as they struck their Final Alarm for Chief Charlie Woodard.

We join the U.S. Wildland Fire Service and the U.S. Forest Service in mourning the loss of three wildland firefighters who died battling the Knowles and Gore fires on Saturday. We will keep their families as well as the two additional firefighters that sustained injuries in our prayers.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is devastated to share that three wildland firefighters lost their lives on Saturday, June 27, as part of an interagency response to the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border. Additionally, two crew members were injured in the line of duty and have been transported to a hospital.

Our immediate focus is on supporting their families, friends, and fellow crewmates during this incredibly difficult time.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service stands united with the USDA Forest Service in grief and in our unwavering support for the loved ones left behind. Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Additional details will be shared as they are able to be released.
