When we are needed, we are there.” The Oregon Military Department’s purpose is to administer, house, equip and train the Oregon National Guard – a ready force to support the Governor during unrest or natural disaster and as a reserve force to the United States Air Force and the United States Army. Today we celebrate Flag Day, and it's also the U.S. Army's 251st birthday. The Army was founded as the Continental Army on June 14, 1775, more than a year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Oregon National Guardsmen and civilian employees took the opportunity to learn more about the Environmental Natural Resource Team's work, part of the Oregon Military Department, during their recent work with the Western Burrowing Owl at the Rees Training Center from June 8–11, 2026. The team has been involved in Burrowing Owl conservation through outreach and education. Research and study of the Owls have become an inspiring recovery story at the Former Umatilla Chemical Depot in north-central Morrow County, Oregon. The construction of artificial burrows from repurposed materials has played a key role in enabling a once-declining population to rebound from just 3–4 breeding pairs in the early 2000s to nearly 100 nesting pairs and over 400 chicks in 2025. 📸 by John Hughel, OMD Public Affairs

Oregon Army and Air National Guardsmen, along with members of the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Air Force Reservists, worked alongside Clackamas County Fire Department first responders during a joint training exercise along the Sandy River in Sandy, Oregon, on June 5, 2026. The Water Rescue Team Air Mobility Exercise simulated a flood scene in the fictional “Clackamine County,” where rising river levels cut off neighbors. Combined teams from the Clackamas Fire Department, Oregon Army National Guard’s Bravo Co., 1-168th Regiment, Golf Co., 1-189th Regiment, Oregon Air National Guard 125th Special Tactics Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard from Air Station Astoria, and U.S. Air Force Reserve assigned to the 304th Rescue Squadron executed waterborne operations. Volunteers and staff at the Oregon Military Museum spent most of the day on June 2, 2026, moving and installing the F-4 Phantom II Fighter Jet at the Oregon Military Museum, at Camp Withycombe, in Happy Valley, Oregon. It was challenging at times, with one of the rear tires getting stuck in the lawn and some tight angles as the jet was moved from the maintenance area at Camp Withycombe to its new home adjacent to the main entrance. The jet will be repainted in the future as it is restored to its original color details from its days flying with the 142nd (Fighter Interceptor) Wing. JUNE 11: HONOR & REMEMBER: THE BOND OF US FREEDOMS, SERVICE & SACRIFICE — For June’s Extended Evening Hours presentation, starting at 6pm, COL (ret) Michelle Stewart shares the history and impact of the organization Honor & Remember (honorandremember.org) and explores the bond between US freedoms and the sacrifice of US service members. An Honor & Remember Flag will be presented to Marilyn Rustand Lieurance, in recognition for her work as well as her father and fallen WWII P-17 pilot, 1LT “Rusty” Rustand. Marilyn will also share her experience volunteering with the WWII Battlefield Research and Preservation Group, the American War Orphans Network (AWON), and the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).
JUNE 13: LIVING HISTORY DAY: PRESENT TO PAST — Experience history in motion as we showcase modern military vehicles, equipment, and technology alongside their historic counterparts. This year’s focus is on the “Modern Era” (1990s-2020s), highlighting the more recent service of veterans from the Gulf War through 9/11 to the present day. Participants include US Army Corps of Engineers, National Association for Black Veterans, Employer Support of the Guard & Reserves, 142nd Fighter Wing Emergency Management Office, and Oregonian veterans of the Gulf War.
