Let’s take a moment to get excited about all the great things happening in Salem!
Our water project is wrapping up, paving the way for the Mill Street Bridge and Valley Street bridge replacements. Sidewalk projects will also be starting soon, and even better, they came in under budget!
Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, the water project was NOT over budget. In fact, we had funds remaining—enough to replace a cast iron pipe on Terrace and Trainer, repair a damaged fire hydrant, and upgrade a water line for Trainor customers from a 1-inch pipe to a larger line. **It’s important to note: when grant funding is used, projects cannot exceed the approved amount.**
Looking ahead, $3.5 million has been approved for the sewer and stormwater project. We worked closely with Region VI and EL Robinson to ensure this project will be fully grant-funded. Our goal remains clear—we will not take on additional debt that would fall on our residents.
We also have critical needs grants currently under review to bring water and sewer services to residents who do not yet have access.
We are working with another funding agency to get much needed upgrades for our sewer plant.
Financially, we are making strong progress such as paying down debt and making smart financial decisions. Like selling an unused ambulance that was costing over $1,500 per month. Even more exciting, YOUR EMS is turning a profit for the first time EVER! If you happen to see Kayla or Nathan Ritchie congratulate them on becoming EMTs!
The library is growing again—it’s doubling in size…again!
Main Street beautification is right around the corner, along with improvements in our parks. If you haven’t attended an events meeting yet, they’re held every Thursday at 6 PM at City Hall. This is your city—come out, get involved, and share your ideas!
We’re also collaborating with Salem University on several upcoming projects. One exciting highlight: Salem is becoming a hub for rugby, and the university has recently become the 5th college/university to add a women’s rugby team. This is a huge step forward for both the school and our community! Don’t forget to come out and cheer on all of the teams at Salem University.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room…roads. With winter behind us and conditions improving, roadwork is a priority. Our Public Works team is dedicated and working hard, but repairs take time especially after a tough winter. We appreciate your patience.
Finally, Delegate Riley attended our last meeting and addressed key concerns we raised last year. Through the REAP program, we’ll be able to remove many more dilapidated structures and create opportunities for new housing or business in Salem. As well as the EMS being able to receive some money from the Lottery Fund, and many others.
There’s a lot happening that I could add, and even more ahead.
The future of Salem is bright! Come out and join us now that the weather is changing. We also still have openings in Ward 2 and Ward 3. Now is the time to represent your community.
Thanks,
Brandie
