The cicadas are here, and with them come a plague of worries! What are those holes in your yard? How will cicadas affect your garden? Will they bite? Do I need to do anything to get rid of them?

🪲Adult periodical cicadas (the ones you are seeing) do not bite or sting, nor do they eat plants.
🪲Healthy, mature trees will be fine despite egglaying. Young trees (planted five or fewer years ago) can be protected.
🪲Pesticides are mostly ineffective and may be harmful to the birds and other predators of cicadas.
🪲Periodical cicadas will be gone in about 4 to 6 weeks, so just hang in there!

MU Extension horticulture specialists have spent three years researching how to successfully grow lavender in Missouri.

This versatile plant is gaining popularity in a variety of products like detergents, body soaps and is used in cooking and medicines. It also attracts pollinators and repels unwanted insects like fleas, flies and mosquitoes!

In the next phase of research, the plan is to explore ways to incorporate lavender into Missouri's agricultural economy through agritourism and value-added products.

A guide on growing lavender will be available soon.

Cover Crop Sign-Up has started!

04/02/2024

According to the Short-Term Prediction Research and Transition Center map from NASA, the majority of Missouri's soils are currently experiencing a significant moisture deficit, surpassing even the conditions at the beginning of 2023. With this knowledge, it may be wise for farmers to adjust their approach as planting season approaches.

Consider techniques such as light spring tilling, early termination of cover crops and effective w**d control to help with the 2024 planting season.
