This weekend, RISE Youth participants engaged in a powerful discussion centered around one important question: What makes you feel safe?
Our youth reflected on the systems and spaces in their lives that provide a sense of safety and support, including their families, friends, schools, faith communities, and trusted mentors. They explored why those environments make them feel secure and how they can carry those feelings of trust, belonging, and confidence into other areas of their lives, such as their communities and peer relationships.
Feeling safe is essential for young people. When youth feel safe, they are more likely to express themselves, build healthy relationships, take positive risks, develop leadership skills, and reach their full potential. Creating safe spaces allows our youth to grow, learn, and thrive while building the confidence needed to navigate life's challenges.
Following our discussion, RISE Youth attended the Juneteenth Celebration at the Enoch Davis Center, where they had the opportunity to connect with community organizations and learn about resources available to them, including summer camps, Big Brothers Big Sisters, mentorship opportunities, and other youth-focused programs. Our participants also learned about the history and significance of Juneteenth and why it remains an important celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and progress.
At RISE, we are committed to helping youth develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to become leaders in their schools, homes, and communities.
