Greetings and welcome,

I am Esther Matthews , I am pleased to serve you as the new President of the St Petersburg Branch.

Founded February 12, 1909, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the nation’s oldest, largest and most widely recognized civil rights organization. We are living in times that will challenge us all, and the NAACP will be here to lead the change for justice and equality in America. I believe it is time for us to work together from the ground to the top to truly have a be

tter community. We must ENACT change – BUILD bridges – and UNITE each person in our community! My priority going into the new year is to:
Re-Energize – The Branch and The Community
Re-Claim – The Respect of The Community
Re-Cruit – Powerful Leaders in our Community

Passion/Platform

~ Promoting IMPACT and CHANGE through Collaboration.
~Appealing for NAACP membership to create a true “One Community” mindset
~ The need for “True” Workforce Housing
~ The encouragement of the Faith-based community to wrap their arms around families in need in the community
~ The encouragement of the school system to implement evidence-based social emotional learning curriculum
~ The need of community support for literacy -Only 27.1% of Black students testing at reading proficiency; despite 81.3% graduation rate
~ Creating a spirit of Prevention-vs-Punishment with our city’s law enforcement agency’s

During my term, I will be an approachable leader who will continue to be engaged in our community. We know that it takes a team to truly make a difference, so please join the NAACP Pinellas Branch – because TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! In Peace,

YOUR VOICE MATTERS — AND WE HEARD YOU!

The St. Petersburg NAACP Branch #5130 is proud to share the results from our Mayoral Debate Community Feedback Survey.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and took the time to provide thoughtful feedback. Your responses confirm what we already know: when our community is informed, engaged, and involved, democracy is stronger.

Some key takeaways:
✅ 82% of respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with the debate
✅ 91% rated the moderators as good or excellent
✅ 64% reported a significant increase in interest in civic engagement and voting
✅ 100% valued hearing directly from the candidates and having the opportunity to ask questions

We also appreciate the constructive recommendations for future events, including larger venues, improved registration processes, and expanded livestream options. We are committed to continuous improvement as we work to create meaningful opportunities for civic engagement.

Thank you for helping us build a more informed, engaged, and empowered St. Petersburg.

Some people would like to make Tuesday’s debate about Esther Sanni or the evaluators—individuals whom I deeply respect and would never knowingly expose to stress, harassment, or public attacks.

But let’s keep the focus where it belongs: on the candidates, their vision, their leadership, and their plans for the future of St. Petersburg.

The evaluators did their job. The debate happened. The community showed up. The candidates had an opportunity to present themselves to voters.

Now it’s time to focus on the issues, the policies, the facts, and the future—not distractions.

Let’s keep the main thing the main thing.
