No one should have to worry that n**e images of themselves can be generated by AI, without their permission, at the push of a button.

While there are huge potential benefits to AI, there is also a lot of harm it can cause. Regulations and legislation is struggling to keep up, but what we did yesterday was an important step.

Anyone can take a non-explicit photo of someone, upload it to a platform that offers an AI nudification feature and create a non-consensual, sexually explicit image or video of the person. Those images and videos often end up on the dark web, shared on social media or exchanged for money.

Last year, police interacted with someone dressed as them, and he was able to move to another location and assassinate Melissa and Mark Hortman. If this murderer was not dressed as a police officer, our friends and colleagues might not have opened their doors and they could be here today. I'm glad we passed this yesterday in a strong bipartisan fashion. I look forward to it being signed into law.

On June 14, 2025, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband, Mark, and dog, Gilbert were killed, and Sen. John Hoffman (DFL-Champlin) and his wife, Yvette, wounded by a gunman at their front door.
