Taking a road trip? If you’re driving to or through the Central Valley or along the Central Coast, be aware of dusty air. The Valley fever fungus grows in certain areas of the state and can get into the air on windy and dusty days.

Keep your car windows rolled up and use recirculating air (if possible) to help prevent breathing in the fungus. Valley fever can cause cough, fever and fatigue that lasts for weeks.

Think you might have food poisoning? The food that made you sick is often not the last thing you ate. You can help keep others from getting sick by reporting your illness and keeping track of the food you ate the week before you got sick.

Local health departments work to solve foodborne outbreaks, and your reports help make a difference!

Back to school season is here, and head lice might be too. But did you know head lice are more likely to spread at home or at a friend's house than in the classroom? During play dates and sleepovers, keep heads apart and don't share personal items.

Teach kids to avoid activities that could spread head lice, like:

- Head-to-head contact during play

- Sharing personal items like clothes, hats, brushes or hair ties
