California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond joined the Monterey County Office of Education today to celebrate 1 million CalKIDS Program Scholarship Accounts claimed statewide! šŸ’øšŸ“ˆ

This milestone builds on Superintendent Thurmondā€™s longstanding work to give students the tools to build financially secure futures. In 2024, he championed AB 2927, landmark legislation that made personal finance a high school graduation requirement in California. Beginning in 2027ā€“28, every public high school must offer a standalone personal finance course, with the requirement taking effect for the graduating class of 2030ā€“31.

Why does it matter? Research shows that high-quality personal finance education can lead to better financial outcomes in adulthood, including improved debt and credit outcomes.

Welcoming Salinas Students Back to School!
California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond visited Salinas High School and Boronda Meadows Elementary School this morning to celebrate the new school year and highlight the importance of literacy and whole-child education.
At Salinas High, Superintendent Thurmond visited classrooms and connected with students and educators. At Boronda Meadows, he read with third-grade students and met with student leaders.
Both schools are part of Californiaā€™s Community Schools Partnership Program, a $4.1 billion initiative, the largest of its kind in the nation. Community Schools connect students and families with academic, social-emotional, health and other supports.
Superintendent Thurmond commended both schools for ensuring students have the resources and opportunities they need to learn and succeed.

Today in Baldwin Park, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond visited Tracy Elementary School (Baldwin Park Unified School District) to see first-hand its strong culture and outstanding student growth as one of Californiaā€™s top literacy-focused elementary schools.

Superintendent Thurmond celebrated Tracy Elementary for leading the way when it comes to student success. Data shows that last year, Tracy Elementary saw an increase of 6.4 percentage points in English language arts/literacy, outperforming the statewide increase of 1.8 percentage points. Tracy has become an excellent example of how literacy supports can benefit our students! šŸ“šāœØ

This is what real-world learning looks like: students exploring careers, building skills, and preparing for their future! šŸ”¬šŸ’”

Today in Duarte, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond visited student interns at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Research Center. The students are participating in a paid internship program created that expands access to high-quality, work-based learning opportunities for California high school students.

The California Department of Education partnered with the Foothill Workforce Development Board to support students from the Duarte Unified School District, Monrovia Unified School District, Pasadena Unified School District, and the Azusa Unified School District.

Through hands-on experiences in biomedical research, healthcare, and other STEAM industries, students can explore career options, build valuable technical and professional skills, and prepare for college and future careers. Superintendent Thurmond has championed career technical education and skilled trade programs across the state that connect students to real-world experience, mentorship, and pathways to employment.
