It was great attending the “Roadmap Toward Ending Homelessness” presentation by the Gateway Cities Council of Governments to learn about their vison for addressing homelessness. My colleague, Speaker Anthony Rendon, was the keynote speaker who provided information on the funds available by California to partner with local government and reach solutions that will have a meaningful impact on this issue.

Vaccine records will be increasingly needed as society continues to reopen. Restaurants, public events, schools, places of employment and other locations may require proof of vaccination for a person to enter. For those interested in obtaining a Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record, rather than bringing your COVID-19 vaccine card with you everywhere, please visit https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/.

This year, the Legislature and Governor Newsom passed a historic $166.5 million API Equity Budget to fund critical resources in response to the surge in anti-API hate, as well as address the longstanding racial inequities that have harmed the API community for generations. I was pleased to join my colleagues Assemblymember Phil Ting, Assemblymember Ash Kara, and local leaders from the API community in a Roundtable to discuss the transformative potential of this investment. This weekend the communities of the 49th District came to celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the YMCA of West San Gabriel Valley’s new Children Center. This project has taken four years from concept to completion and I am most pleased that we were able to appropriate state funding to make this a reality. The YMCA of West San Gabriel Valley has been an invaluable resource for families in providing recreational, wellness and education services. The new Children’s Center demonstrates what is possible when the community works together with government to benefit all. Congratulations YMCA of West San Gabriel Valley.

Today, I was very honored to join the communities of El Monte and Temple City to observe Veterans Day. I want to thank all of our cities in the 49th District who held ceremonies to recognize all of the brave service members of our nation’s armed forces whose courage and valor guarantee and protect the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.

Thank you Chinatown Service Center for honoring me at your recent 50th Anniversary Gala. It was an honor to join you in celebrating decades of services you have rendered to families, youth and seniors in the Greater Los Angeles area through wrap-around services that are multilingual and multicultural. I’m very pleased that with the support from the State of California the Chinatown Service Center will be able to enhance its social services in the San Gabriel Valley.

The COVID 19 pandemic has forced many Angelenos to struggle with food insecurity. Let’s remember that the holidays are a time to show gratitude and share with others. I was pleased to recently host the Ninth Annual “Operation Gobble” – Turkey Giveaway in the 49th District, in partnership with the San Gabriel Valley Water Company, California American Water Company and Golden State Water Company, to provide meals for families in need. Our 2021 community partners are Boys and Girls Clubs of West San Gabriel Valley and Eastside; Home of Angels; Potrero Heights Community and Senior Center; The Kiwanis Club of Temple City; Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post, Greater El Monte Post 10218; El Monte/South El Monte Emergency Resources Association; The Church of Our Savior Center; Asian Youth Center; and La Casa De San Gabriel Community Center. Thank you all to helping our neighbors.

Thank you California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus Institute for honoring me last week with the Excellence in Public Service and Leadership Award. I was pleased to be recognized with my colleague, Senator Richard Pan. It’s been an honor to represent my constituents in the 49th District and the people of California to improve the quality of life for our diverse communities. I also want to commend the California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus Institute for their incredible work in training the next generation of policy leaders with its Capitol Academy.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Bryan Urias and offer my deep condolences to his family. His dedication to public service, to his community and in our region was well known and respected by many. More recently, Bryan worked at my District Office providing much need assistance to our constituents. Like many of you who knew Bryan, we will remember him for his big heart, his sense of duty to public service, his leadership as a local elected official, and his devotion to helping others.

Information regarding his cause of death was not immediately released.

150 years ago today, the worst racially motivated mass-lynching in California occurred here in Los Angeles when a mob attacked the local Chinatown and left in its violent wake 18 Chinese immigrants dead. To commemorate this incident, I joined with local community leaders at the site of the lynching for a moment of silence and reflection of this tragic event. I also shared with those gathered at this memorial that we in the Legislature recently passed ACR 55, a resolution that I authored, which commemorates October 24, 2021 as the 150thAnniversary of the Chinese Massacre of 1871. Let us remember those victims and never forget what xenophobia and hate can do.
