What a turnout in La Cañada!

More than 60 friends, neighbors, students and community leaders joined us for our Back to School Pizza Party. We filled the room, shared some pizza and talked about PCC and the November election.

This is a nonpartisan race, and I’m grateful to everyone who came together to talk about the future of Pasadena City College.

Thank you, La Cañada!

Nine years ago in the Pasadena Media studios, I explained to Hoyt Hilsman that the thing many don’t realize: Tuition was never the real barrier to an education.
$46 a unit. Half of California’s community college students paying nothing at all. And still, students were dropping out because of rent, books, the bus, childcare. That was 2017. PCC still costs $46 a unit. The real cost is still everything around it. Textbooks. Transportation. Housing. That’s the work I’m going back to the PCC Board to finish.

You may think PCC has one campus. It offers classes in more than 30 locations, plus online.

Our Foothill Campus offers free classes for people learning English to become American citizens, earn their high school diploma, or prepare for careers in cosmetology and other fields.

At John Muir High School and La Cañada High School, students earn high school and college credit at the same time, and some finish a degree before they graduate.

I have taken classes at PCC myself. This is the access I want to protect and expand.

In this nonpartisan election, I respectfully ask for your support.

“Student debt is one of the civil rights issues of our time.”
That’s one of the issues I discussed with Sheryl Turner Sheryl Turner in a new interview with Local News Pasadena Local News Pasadena.
We covered a lot of ground: free textbooks, student debt, transfer, workforce training, PCC’s budget challenges, the Eaton Fire and why I decided to run for the Board again.
But much of it comes back to a simple question: Are we making it easier or harder for students to get the education they need without taking on debt they can’t afford?
Thank you to Sheryl for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation.
