California’s rivers need a voice in the State Capitol.

Friends of the River joined Tribal, environmental, fishing, and Delta advocates in Sacramento to make one thing clear: California can’t keep squeezing more water from rivers that are already overallocated.

Advocates called on legislators to protect river flows, strengthen Tribal participation in water decisions, and reject policies that put even more pressure on the Bay-Delta.

What would we lose to raise a dam?

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing to study a proposal to raise Pine Flat Dam by 12 feet, potentially adding 124,000 acre-feet of storage.

But more water storage could mean less river. Raising the dam could flood beaches, camps, a popular takeout, and another stretch of the Kings River landscape.

🐟 White sturgeon are running out of time. ⏳ The Bay-Delta’s white sturgeon population has declined dramatically, yet the state has delayed taking the steps needed to protect this imperiled native species.

So Friends of the River and three partner organizations are taking the state to court, seeking to force California Department of Fish & Wildlife to follow the law and move forward with protections under the California Endangered Species Act.

We can’t solve one water crisis by creating another.

The Southern San Joaquin Valley is pumping more groundwater than its basins can sustainably support, and major reductions in water use may be unavoidable.

But bringing groundwater use into balance shouldn’t mean taking even more water from rivers that are already overallocated.

Real solutions will require difficult choices: using less water, changing what we grow, and finding less water-intensive uses for farmland.
