Round Lake Beach, IL – The Round Lake Beach Police Department is providing information regarding a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Saturday night near Route 83 and Rollins Road. The crash investigation is being handled by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.
At approximately 8:44 p.m., a Round Lake Beach police officer located a vehicle at Route 83 and Rollins Road that had crashed into a traffic signal. The driver, a 39-year-old male, sustained critical injuries. Officers immediately began life-saving measures, and the driver was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Preliminary information indicates the vehicle had fled from another Round Lake Beach police officer a few minutes earlier during an attempted traffic stop on Cedar Lake Road, just south of Rollins Road. The crash occurred approximately one mile from where the officer ended the traffic stop attempt. MCAT is conducting the crash investigation. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is also involved in the investigation.
Route 83 and Rollins Road was partially closed during the investigation, and Mobile Eye was activated to assist with traffic control at the intersection. A Hyper-Reach notification was disseminated to the community, and the roadway was cleared at approximately 12:30 a.m.
The driver’s identity is not being released at this time. Any release of the driver’s identity will be coordinated with the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
This remains an active investigation, and no additional information is available at this time.
