This week was truly a monumental one for the Roselle Fire Department.

On March 25th, for the first time in our 130-year history, we promoted our first female firefighter to the rank of Captain.

Captain Rayna Latimer, born and raised in Roselle, has shown from day one that she belongs. From starting her career in public safety as a corrections officer to becoming a firefighter in 2019, she has continued to push forward. Over the past seven years, she has broken barriers in a department that was all male for over a century. She has attended the National Fire Academy, became a certified stress debriefer, and created our first Junior Fire Academy. Now, she makes history as our first female Captain.

We also proudly promoted Battalion Chief Guadiane, who has dedicated over 20 years to this department. Though not originally from Roselle, he chose this town, built his life here, and committed himself to serving our residents. Over the years, he has faced challenges, setbacks, and one of life’s toughest battles—and he won. That tells you everything you need to know about the kind of man he is. In addition to his role as a firefighter, he also serves as a paramedic. Public service runs through him.

Captain Fred Rittinger, born and raised in Roselle, was also promoted on this special night. His roots in this town run deep, with his family still maintaining the First Presbyterian Church on 5th and Chestnut. He began as a volunteer firefighter, served as a police officer, and in 2017 became a career firefighter. Through hard work and dedication, he now steps into his new role as Captain.

We also welcomed three new firefighters to our department. While I may not know you personally yet, from the time spent during the process, it is truly an honor to give you this opportunity. You are stepping into the best job in the world, serving the best borough.
Congratulations to Matthew Natson, Marco Morales, and J’Mar Rose as you begin your careers.

I would also like to thank the Mayor, Council, and Public Safety. It is truly an honor to serve as your Fire Chief and to be given the opportunity to continue moving this department forward.

These new hires and promotions are made possible because of the years of service given by those before us. Congratulations to Battalion Chief McBride and Captain Palmer on your retirement, and we wish you nothing but the best in your future.

This week wasn’t just about promotions—it was about history, resilience, and the continued growth of our department.

"Badges are given… but respect is earned. And this week, it was earned."
