Shortly after I graduated in 2007, my high school’s board of education was debating whether students should be allowed to form a chapter of what was then called the Gay-Straight Alliance. I proudly showed up to support my friends and classmates when the pressure seemed to be moving against them.
This was five years before President Obama came out in support of same-sex marriage, and eight years before the Supreme Court recognized that right for every American. To me, it was simple then, and it’s simple now: every person deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. That commitment will never fade.
Happy Pride Month to all those who celebrate.
