Hello Friends and Neighbors in the Rock City Fire Protection District.
We would like to begin by saying “Does it seem like 20 years ago?” That is correct, 20 years ago we ran
a referendum to build the new fire station. Now we can say “It is completely paid for”.
In December 2025 the final payment was made, and the district is 100% debt free. When you receive your property tax bill in May or June, please take note the ROCK CITY FIRE-AMB line has decreased as the building bond levy has been removed. The chart at the bottom shows the actual rate from 2011 through 2024 including the building bond. In 2025 this drops off as the bond has been paid.
Over the last 20 years the district trustees and firefighters have worked very hard to maintain
equipment and the station, while keeping in mind that we want to spend taxpayer funds responsibly.
We have been very fortunate to secure grants for updating equipment to also ease the burden.
With that being said, there are some updates and improvements that have been out of reach. We need to begin updating the fire apparatus as the average age of the trucks is 27 years. The newest is 14 years old with the oldest at 40 years.
The cost of providing 24/7 full-time paramedic ambulance service is also increasing, along with the call volumes for both fire and ambulance.
On March 17th, 2026 there will be a question on the ballot asking to approve an increase of .2405%
above the limiting rate for fire protection and ambulance purposes.
What this means: By voting yes, the owner of a $100,000 home will see an increase of $80.08 on their tax bill received in 2027. Please keep in mind that same tax bill will be decreasing by $40.04 in 2026.
What this will do: By approving the ballot question, the increase will provide funds to keep the fire apparatus updated. It will also fund updates to equipment and help to continue providing 24/7 paramedic ambulance service.
Please do not hesitate to ask any questions, and you are welcome to set up a time to stop by for a visit and a tour of the station to have any questions answered.
We want to be sure you have all the information necessary to make an educated decision.
