We understand that many in the community are disappointed to hear that this year’s Fun Fair will only be held for one day instead of the traditional two-day event. This decision was not made lightly. For generations, the Fun Fair has been an important tradition for our department and our community, and we know how much it means to so many people.
Unfortunately, over the past several years, the costs associated with running the event have increased significantly — especially food, supplies, entertainment, and operating expenses. At the same time, participation in the Fire Queen program, which has historically been one of the largest sources of fundraising revenue for the Fun Fair, has declined, and there are no Fire Queen contestants running this year. As much as we wish things were different, it simply is no longer financially responsible for the department to continue operating a two-day event that costs more money than it brings in. This will be evaluated next year.
The Capon Valley Ruritan Club in Yellow Spring will be hosting their annual car show on July 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. As fellow community-minded volunteers and a nonprofit organization, we do not want to compete with another local nonprofit fundraiser. We encourage everyone to stop by and support their event as well. Strong communities are built when local organizations support one another, and we wish them a successful event.
We want to assure everyone that this does not mean North River Valley Volunteer Fire Company is shutting its doors. Rumors and assumptions being shared online are simply untrue. Our department is still here, still serving the community, and still committed to protecting Rio and the surrounding areas. We have a strong and active membership that remains dedicated to answering every call for service and continuing to provide emergency response to our community when needed. Like many volunteer organizations, we are adapting to changing times and looking for new, more sustainable fundraising opportunities moving forward.
We truly appreciate the support this community has shown us over the years, and we hope everyone will still come out on Friday, July 3rd to support the Fun Fair, enjoy the parade, food, music by Foreign Company, and time together as a community. While change is never easy, every decision being made is with the long-term future of the fire company in mind.
We are always looking for dedicated volunteers. Whether you’re interested in firefighting, helping with fundraising events, or supporting the department in other ways, we would love to hear from you! Please contact us for an application and learn how you can become part of the North River Valley Volunteer Fire Company family.
Thank you for your understanding, your continued support, and for helping us keep this tradition alive for years to come.
