America 250- Village of Richwood

America 250- Village of Richwood Gail DeGood-Guy is this page's author. America is celebrating 250 years of Independence! Gail DeGood-Guy.

This page will provide history about the Revolutionary War years (1775 - 1783). It's also the go-to spot for celebrations in the entire North Union area. I'm a 24 year retired Air Force Veteran and a member of the America 250-Village of Richwood committee. Thanks to the Richwood Bank for initially setting up this page and allowing me to take it over for all the inputs.

Draft Declaration of Independence is written!

05/30/2026

On 11 June 1776, the 2nd Continental Congress appointed a 5-man committee to draft the "Declaration of Independence". Thomas Jefferson (lead writer), John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston. It had 3 parts: (1) - the preamble (we hold these truths to be self-evident...); (2) - lists 27 grievances against the present King of Great Britain (failure to protect the colonists pursuit of happiness...); and (3) - declares legal separation and total independence from Britain and dissolves all political connections between the two (free and independent states...!)

Congress spent days debating and editing the draft text. The vote to accept the ground-breaking document wouldn't happen until 2 July!

Stay tuned for the most incredible time in our history - 4 July 1776!

You'll be seeing these Revolutionary War Veteran banners at various events around North Union through the end of the year! They are 4 of so many original 13 colony FIRST Citizen Soldiers - who fought for our independence! It's because of them that our country was declared THE United States of America in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris!
