🇺🇸MSgt. Charley Carl Patterson (1929–2023) of Perry County, Mississippi, answered his nation’s call in two branches of military service and faithfully served his country for more than two decades across the globe.
Born on December 27, 1929, in the Janice Community near Brooklyn, Mississippi, Charley Patterson graduated from Janice High School and, at just 18 years old, joined the United States Navy. After training in San Diego, California, he was stationed at Hickam Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, during the early years of the Cold War.
Following a brief return to civilian life, he again chose service to his country by joining the United States Air Force. Over the next 22½ years, MSgt. Patterson served at duty stations stretching from Mississippi to England, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, Arkansas, South Korea, Thailand, and Michigan. His career carried him around the world during a critical period in American military history.
Among his distinguished assignments was service with the United Nations Command in Seoul, Korea, where he earned the Joint Services Commendation Medal under special orders. He also served on humanitarian assignment at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, reflecting both his professionalism and compassion.
After retiring from military service, MSgt. Patterson returned home to Mississippi with his bride and continued serving his community through civilian work and later with the United States Postal Service, where he dedicated another 23½ years before retirement. P
