Greater Richmond Fit4Kids

Greater Richmond Fit4Kids Fit4Kids works to improve the health and wellness of children by increasing physical activity and promoting healthy eating.

The organization is focused on improving children’s health and wellness in RVA. We believe that active, well-nourished kids learn more in school and have greater self-esteem. Physical activity and mindful eating is about more than avoiding disease - it's about improving children's quality of life.

Our 2025-2026 Learning Gardens Impact Report is here! 🌱

This year, students across Greater Richmond experienced the joy of growing and tasting fresh fruits and vegetables while exploring science through hands-on learning.

We are especially grateful to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation, a dedicated Fit4Kids partner for more than a decade. Their support helped bring our first 10 Learning Gardens to life, a program that has since grown to 54 gardens. They have also provided seedlings for our gardens and community members to plant, along with fresh produce for student tastings that expand access to healthy foods.

This year, the Foundation will also support cooking classes for early childhood educators, helping them prioritize personal wellness and prepare simple, nutritious recipes.

We are excited for another year of Learning Gardens and can’t wait to share more highlights and impact throughout the school year!

Our Learning Gardens are back in session! 🌱

Students across Greater Richmond today celebrated the new garden season by planting seeds and tasting a fan favorite fruit and veggie dish, Pizza Salad. To ensure students can enjoy Learning Gardens this and future years, help us continue with us Birdies for Charity presented by TowneBank. As part of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by Virginia’s Richmond Region (October 9-11), this year, every gift to Fit4Kids is matched at 10% through October 11th.

Gifts can be made online here: https://p2p.onecause.com/kftcbfc/charity/greater-richmond-fit4kids Or, they can be made by check, through stock, EFT, or a donor-advised fund and count for the 10% match. Reach out to learn how!

We had a blast at Hogwarts last night! Thank you to the Richmond Flying Squirrels for including Fit4Kids in a fun-filled evening at Harry Potter Night! With pepsi and your support, you helped raise more than $7,000 for through the jersey auction!! 🪄⚡️👏

We loved watching a great game of baseball, meeting so many Squirrels fans and playing our fun baseball movement game, and best of all, having our new Wellness Integration Specialist, Arlene Cary, throw out the first pitch. Arlene is working alongside Meghan Dorgan, our other Specialist, with integrating active movement in the classroom in Hopewell, Petersburg, and Prince George. ⚾️🎉

Don’t forget to come out to Fun Fest on September 27th at Park365 for more healthy fun! Tickets are FREE register through the link in our bio!

It’s back to school season, and the Fit4Kids team is ready for another great year! 🎉

We enjoyed getting together today to reflect on the past year at Sports Backers Active Living Hub and share our goals for the year ahead. We’re excited to bring impactful programming to thousands of youth across our community and can’t wait to share what’s in store!

If you missed it, we were also featured last week on Sports Backers’ On the Move with Nan & Kam podcast, celebrating various nonprofits in honor of National Nonprofit Day. Thank you so much to Sports Backers for being amazing partners - we appreciate the shoutout! Listen to it: https://youtu.be/At75K2xmoZk

Throughout the year, we love sharing exciting updates from the many programs we lead across Greater Richmond and the Tri-Cities. Now, we want to share the impact behind those moments!

This year, Fit4Kids reached more than 14,000 youth through programming spanning early childhood through high school. Over the next month, we’ll be highlighting the impact of that work, starting with Game On, Girl! - Fit4Kids! 🏀🥗

Learning never gets old! These past few days, CEO, Mary Dunne Stewart and Program Coordinators, Jesse Cashin and Jordyn Vitorino, joined dozens of individuals from other organizations all across the state who serve as AmeriCorps host sites at Maymont to convene, reflect and discuss best practices with running successful AmeriCorps programs. 📝

Our VISTA member, Nick Gada, who is helping us this year with capacity-building with our volunteer program, also attended and participated in a service project at Maymont, helping make educational materials for teachers, and engaged in professional development discussing service to career pathways.

We are about to welcome our next cohort of AmeriCorps volunteers next month. If you enjoy gardening or biking and want to help inspire the next generation, there are still spots available at various time slots. Apply now! https://grfit4kids.org/employment-and-internship-opportunities/
