Join us for a Community Meeting on Saturday, April 4th at 9:30am at Perry Alison Playfield, located on the north side of 190th between Blossom Ln and Cluster Ln.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair and join the conversation.

We will cover several important topics shaping our community, including improvements to our commercial corridors to make them more pedestrian friendly while supporting revitalization, new public art and placemaking efforts, crossing guard and safety initiatives, upcoming community events, and a discussion on the use of our parks and open spaces, including opportunities to better activate underutilized areas like Perry Alison Playfield.

We will also highlight how the city is taking a leadership role in addressing homelessness through coordinated, data driven efforts and strong collaboration with the community.

All are welcome, and I hope to see you there.

Supervisor Michell’s motion passed unanimously to put the alignment on Hawthorne Blvd!

VICTORY! METRO BOARD APPROVES HAWTHORNE ROUTE!

It was a two and a half hour nail-biter, but in the end the Metro Board voted unanimously for the Hawthorne routing of the Green/C/K Line extension. We owe a debt of gratitude to Supervisor Holly Mitchell and Mayor Butts for the alternate motion that ultimately won. Great teamwork between the City, the residents and Lawndale elected officials and residents. The audience looked like a sea of red shirts… This was truly a David versus Goliath victory. Congrats to all who put their heart into it. It was a long road since the first meeting with Bill Brand, Nikki Negrete-Mitchell and some of her neighbors, making the victory all the sweeter.

Our own Holly Osborne had the quote of the day: “ Do you want your train to stop at a mall or a cemetery?”. Everyone on the board laughed at her statement. Mayor Butts quoted it in his statement of support for the Hawthorne option. He also commented on the sea of red shirts of the Hawthorne option supporters in the audience.

This month the City Council took an encouraging step toward bringing some balance back to our commercial corridors by finally tackling the issue of smoke shops in our community. After watching smoke shops open one after another while other businesses faced much stricter requirements such as planning commission review, I brought this issue to the council so we could take a closer look. For years smoke shops could open with nothing more than a simple application. There were no limits on how many could operate or how close they could be to each other, to schools, or to youth centers. It is safe to say we ended up with more smoke shops than anyone expected.

Our new ordinance changes that. It clearly defines what a smoke shop is, sets thoughtful regulations, and gives our local law enforcement the ability to enforce the rules without needing help from the state. Over the next five years the number of smoke shops in Redondo Beach will be reduced to five regulated stores that will require a conditional use permit. These are not retail cannabis stores. They are the existing smoke shops that until recently were approved with only an administrative step.

We are also adding common sense limits on advertising and signage that can be seen from the sidewalk so we can reduce youth exposure and keep our neighborhoods feeling welcoming and family friendly.

I am glad we were able to take this first step and I look forward to seeing these changes move forward as we continue shaping a community that reflects the values we all share.

Fats, oils, and grease do not go down the drain!

Black Friday can quickly turn into Brown Friday if we are not careful in the kitchen. Help prevent sewer backups and keep our system running smoothly by placing all food scraps in the green compost bin, using sink strainers to catch debris, and avoiding overuse of the garbage disposal. Large amounts of fats, oils, and grease should be taken to a proper collection center rather than washed down the drain. You can find a collection center here: https://www.redondo.org/departments/public_works/solid_waste_and_recycling/index.php

Share these tips with friends and neighbors so we can all do our part to keep this beautiful blue truck from making an unexpected visit to your street.

Since 1905, RUHS has been more than just a school, it’s been the heart of our community. For generations, it has shaped students’ futures through innovative classes and career pathways - robotics, biomedical sciences, theatre, and journalism (to name just a few), and its athletic facilities rival those of many colleges. If you haven’t experienced the history and pride of RUHS for yourself, you’re truly missing out on one of our community’s greatest treasures.

Youth Pledge of Allegiance Program

The Youth Pledge of Allegiance Program provides local students and youth the opportunity to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at a Redondo Beach City Council Meeting.

The Program is designed to engage young people in local government by giving them an opportunity to appear before the Mayor and Council, share some information about themselves, and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Participation is free, and we welcome all young people with connections to the City of Redondo Beach to apply.

Please visit www.redondo.org/youthpledgeprogram to submit your application.
