I became a Rapid City parent the hard way. A family court case brought my son here in 2018, and this town has been home ever since. Everything I know about fighting for a kid, I learned fighting for mine.

So when I say parents decide, it is not a slogan somebody handed me. It is the lesson of my life. Nobody loves your child more than you do. Not a judge, not an agency, and not a school bureaucracy.

That conviction runs through my whole education plan: curriculum posted in the open, teachers paid what they are worth, and funding that follows the student to the school that fits.

The government wants to decide when, how and where I get to parent. They are intruding into families and have done a bad job of parenting. It’s time we take the power back from the government.

My intention is that I will work to remove the government from the family and let parents parent and decide because parents know best. Not some bureaucratic in Pierre or DC or justice.

Somebody will tell you school choice means I am against public schools. Read my plan and judge for yourself.

I want teachers paid better. I want administrator pay capped so classroom dollars stay in classrooms. I want curriculum posted where every parent can see it, which protects honest teachers from rumor and bad-faith attacks. That is not a war on public schools. That is a plan to make them worth choosing.

Here is the one thing I will not defend: school districts spending taxpayer money to lobby the legislature for more taxpayer money. Your school taxes should buy education, not political muscle in Pierre.

Strong schools compete on quality, not on captive students.

Every kid learns differently. Parents figure that out by the second child.

Some kids thrive in their neighborhood public school. Some need a classical school, a Christian school, a smaller classroom, or a kitchen table. The family knows best, and the money should follow the student to whatever actually works.

That is true school choice, and it is a pillar of my education plan. Education funding exists to educate a child. It does not exist to guarantee a budget line for a building the child does not attend.

District 32 families are not interchangeable. Downtown Rapid City kids and North Rapid kids deserve every option on the table, same as anybody else in South Dakota.
