I encourage everyone to support one another during moments like these. Our county is hurting today, and now more than ever, we must come together as a community, lift each other up, and keep those impacted in our thoughts and prayers.

A special community meeting will be held to discuss the logistics, operations, and future needs of the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office. This meeting will provide an opportunity for community members to receive information, ask questions, and engage in discussion regarding public safety and law enforcement services in Hoke County.

Location and date to be determined. Additional information will be announced once finalized.

Yesterday at East Hoke Middle School, the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office hosted our 2nd Annual Community Forum. It was both informative and engaging, with citizens actively participating in meaningful discussions about our community.

We were especially excited to share the platform with one of our youth, who spoke about the importance of building positive relationships with law enforcement and the impact those connections have had on her life. Hearing her perspective was inspiring and a reminder of why community engagement matters.

I strongly encourage everyone to come out, get involved, and be a part of the conversation as we continue working together to make a positive difference in our community. We have to start somewhere, and by building relationships and supporting one another, we can create lasting change.

This week, the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association hosted sheriffs and their personnel from all corners of the state for their annual Legislative Day at the General Assembly in Raleigh.

Sheriff Virgil of Hoke County was proud to be able to attend the event. Commenting on the experience, Sheriff Virgil said, “The decisions being made in Raleigh have a real impact on public safety in our counties, so I am grateful to be able to be the voice of the people of Hoke County when it comes to criminal justice issues. These relationships we build and maintain during each legislative session ensure that we all share a common goal with our legislators of keeping all of our citizens safe.”

Each year while the legislature is in session, sheriffs and their personnel are invited to join North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association staff and lobbyists at the state capital to meet with legislators. This event allows sheriffs the opportunity to meet face to face with lawmakers to discuss public safety and law enforcement issues.

This year, sheriffs discussed with legislators the necessity that the General Assembly enact legislation to keep THC products out of the hands of minors. Sheriffs across the state continue to see children and others suffer serious illness and effects from buying products that are intoxicating in nature from stores that everyone, even children can access. Sheriffs also discussed a bill related to robocalls. The bill would make it unlawful for someone to call pretending to be a sheriff or personnel with a law enforcement agency in order to defraud a person for money, a common scam this year in North Carolina.

The sheriffs and their personnel who attended began the day with a meeting with North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association staff before making their way to the General Assembly for their scheduled meetings with their legislators.

North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association President Sheriff Ricky Buchanan of McDowell County was in attendance at Legislative Day and emphasized the importance of sheriffs maintaining positive relationships with lawmakers. “Legislative Day lets us have real, one-on-one conversations with our legislators to let them know what deputies are experiencing in our communities, and what our citizens see as real public safety concerns. It is important for them to hear about the issues directly from the source.”

The newly developed Traffic Enforcement Neighborhood Unit, led by James Jones, was created to address traffic concerns and complaints within our neighborhoods, helping make our communities safer for everyone.

🚨 SCAM ALERT🚨

Hoke County residents are advised to be cautious of phone calls originating from (771) 247-3131 or other numbers beginning with the “771” area code.

Reports indicate these calls may be part of a scam. If you receive a call from a suspicious number, do not engage with the caller. Consider blocking the number and contacting law enforcement if you have questions or concerns.

Scammers frequently use caller ID spoofing technology to make it appear as though they are calling from a legitimate government agency or organization. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) generally initiates contact through official mail and does not begin contact with taxpayers through unexpected phone calls, text messages, or emails.

These scammers often use threats of immediate arrest, deportation, legal action, or financial penalties to pressure individuals into providing personal information or sending money. Older adults are frequently targeted, but anyone can become a victim.

To protect yourself:

‼️Hang up immediately.
‼️Do not interact with the caller, press any numbers, or return the call.
‼️Never provide your Social Security number, banking information, or other sensitive personal information.
‼️Report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1-800-366-4484.

Please remain vigilant and share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors to help prevent fraud in our community.
